Re: ok lets have a vote

Tracks have evolved, who would need front brakes anymore? An extra pound and risk grabbing the front and risking serious injury? Even if you did want to run them, you'd have to run freestyle forks to do so, which would then add even more weight.

On a race bike?  Nope, that's just extra weight. tongue

On a street ridden bike, I understand the need for stopping power.  Especially with caliper brakes on rainy days.yikes

I ALWAYS ran front brakes and I've never owned a freestyle bike. BITD a couple of the fastest guys at the track week in and week out ran front brakes all the time. My Pro Am has front brakes and I love it!!

Re: ok lets have a vote

Its a question of what era.

•early ‘70’s Old Old Old School, coaster brakes on Schwinns Huffys and Murrys.
•mid to late ‘70’s Old Old School some did and some didnt as the sport evolved and some still had coasters.
•’80’s Old School some did and some didnt.
•’90’s to current you would be slim to hard pressed to find anyone running them, especially the last 15 years +/-.

mmmm........loop tails.......

...and that's all I have to say about that...

I just liked front brakes because the only trick I could ever do was an endo. lol

Does anyone even give a shit about bmx history or the actual bikes anymore? NOPE. Just good old American greed!!

If I hear the words "RARE", "GRAIL", or "SCORE" one more time, I'm gonna f'n puke. ALSO, NOS is NOT a condition description. Being NOS has NOTHING to do with the actual condition of the part.

Re: ok lets have a vote

I agree with the bike owner's choice.  However, back in the late 70's (pre-front brakes) racing was the big bmx thing at the time.  We all had crappy bikes that we were building and trading up with parts constantly.  You also have to understand that we were all addicted with reading BMX Action/BMX Plus and checking out ALL the newest of parts and innovations that were coming out constantly.  Thus, we would all regularly visit our local bike shops to see what new things were coming in.  Remember, most of us had coaster brakes back then, so having a handbrake for the rear wheel was NEW and very cool indeed!  By the way, most handbrakes back then sucked when it came to actually working and stopping your bike.  Anyway, we started ditching the coaster brakes as the freewheel was way cool and everyone wanted that "sound" on your race bike!  By the way, I would make the argument that freestyle was a continuing innovation that started back in the 70's!  We were constantly competing with one another and doing "trick contests" in local parking lots etc., who could do the farthest wheelie, longest skid, bunny hop, kick out, endo (on curbs w/o front brakes), 180's (& if you were that good, a 360).  You get the point?  Then, front brakes came on the scene in the magazines.  It was the latest craze at that time and my recollection on the race track was that all the cool kids (& those who had parents that bought them everything...those spoiled bastards!!) had them.  So didn't us normal kids, we all went out and started getting them.  Yes, forks were becoming drilled, companies were starting to produce drilled forks because they were the HOT thing at the time!  Remember, hand brakes sucked back then.  Having a front brake increased your chance of not killing yourself when we rode our bikes locally ALL the time, ALL day.  Video games were just coming out and not everyone had them.  We actually did physical exercise back then and we rode our bikes whenever we could!  It was our local mode of transportation too.  As already pointed out on this thread, we were doing freestyle as things were being invented with our race bikes.  That's all we had at the time as freestyle was not even a term back then to my recollection, we called them "trick bikes" where I grew up on the east coast.  Freestyle eventually became the "new thing" and the craze began yet again with something new in BMX.  I recall having front brakes on all of my bikes as they became "invented".  Most everyone that I knew locally and at our tracks did back then.  I completely understand that more recently (i.e.: post 80's) that brakes went south all together, thus the question and argument as to who likes front brakes vs. none.
Just my two cents from back in the day.  Take it or leave it, no matter to me.

No. Most modern carbon fork have no lugs or holes.

Re: ok lets have a vote

Nice.

And why reference modern race bikes, if, anything after 84 sucks.
Many pre 84 race bikes came out the box with front breaks, which would limit a freestyler to do his tricks.
I ran front breaks on my race bike. For a day, pulled them right back off, useless for my needs.

John flipoff.       cool

Opening that first ABA packet was like magic, rectangle plate, rules, stickers and cheese black tape quality numbers. I walked down to my buddy's to open so he could check it out to, he got bored quick when I started reading the rules.
I think I just realized what my Grail is.

My parents did not sponsor me, I mowed lawns, had leathers gloves, vans etc.
