So what brought this on? Your wife come out into the garage and refer to one of your freestyle bikes as a race bike and it hurt a little?

No actually messing with Old bmx dad (Ted)

I love busting his balls about front brakes on cruisers and race bikes

but really dont get front brakes on a race bike though

only had 1 freestyle and ONLY because it was a MCS Styler.

I dont like freestyle bikes , just not my thing.

Re: ok lets have a vote

I think it depends on era. Front brakes look at home on an early to mid 80s race bike. Late 80s on I say no front brake. My department store BMX I got when I was 8 had a front brake and it looked OK. However, I don't like how a front brake will get everything jammed up if the handlebars get turned if the cable is not ran through the stem and the bottom of the fork.

Remember....if everyone came to a bike show without a bike, it would just be a bunch of dudes standing around in a park...and that's just creepy!  If you've got one, bring one.  -Me

Absolutely Not!  And the rear brake shouldn't be used until after the race.

Re: ok lets have a vote

If your hard core then I'd say no. At a beginner lever probably don't matter much. I guess it would depend on the track as well. I never raced so it don't bother me. tongue

Looking for:
CW Fork welded pegs. Peregrine crank set, Rear Peregrine Master white, Rear lavender Peregrine Master mag. Rear Peregrine HP48 mint to nos, Rear Pro Class IV white, Skyway with 990 rear, 401 175 single pinch "drive side".

I ALWAYS ran front brakes and I've never owned a freestyle bike. BITD a couple of the fastest guys at the track week in and week out ran front brakes all the time. My Pro Am has front brakes and I love it!!

+1, Nothing wrong with it if your bike is from the late 70's to mid 80's.
Nowadays, hell no.

Re: ok lets have a vote

They served a purpose in the late 70’s early 80’s. A lot of the tracks had no berms in there turns, the ones I raced on were flat. If you could master using the front brake along with the rear you could keep your feet on the pedals and accelerate out of the turn quicker.

Re: ok lets have a vote

I’ll say no ..... so what if you were racing drunk and you grabbed the wrong brake and flipped you over the bars .... now you have to go to the dentist, so just  easier to leave them off plus it saves weight to

Re: ok lets have a vote

I believe that the only reason BMX bikes came with front brakes was because of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).  Same reason bikes required reflectors. If I remember correctly bicycles had to be equipped accordingly: coaster brake, coaster brake and front caliper or freewheel with 2 calipers. I'd say front brakes AREN't BMX simply because when I raced NBL, they weren't allowed.
