COMPARING NEW SKOOL

I know, first we have to establish what SPECIFICALLY IS considered "NEW SKOOL" (what specifically distinguishes it) and when NEW SKOOL started. Although torn about is 2004 MID or NEW SKOOL, I tend to lean to when INTEGRATED HEADSETS were introduced..around 2004? My '04 HARO RETRO MASTER was the first bike I saw with this design upgrade and the smaller tooth count sprockets..

Just curious..how different are current NEW SKOOL bikes to FIRST GEN NEW SKOOL bikes from 2006/2007 or as early as 2004?
What's the differences from.. 2004-2007 to 2019? And don't say 12 to 15 years roll roll roll
Weight, geometry, overall design?

Heres my profound, life changing statement.
Lifes a bitch..PASS ME A BEER.

They're reacting and that's wonderful. It's better than them sitting there doing nothing. I say make them react - do whatever's in your power to move the audience, and if that's where it is, and there where it is with America, sex and violence, then I say project it.

Re: COMPARING NEW SKOOL

There are quite a few differences between 2004 and today. I'm building a couple Wethepeople Omen's from 2004. I would consider them midschool. Both have press in threadless headsets, not integrated. One has American bb, the other has a euro bb. The tubing diameter is much larger than current bikes. Dropouts tend to be huge in 04 yet though the Omen was one of the first frames to have a smaller dropout. The Omen runs a 36t sprocket where a new bike would have trouble running a 30t with the chainstays being wide enough for newschool tires. Geometry is different to a new bike and they weigh quite a bit more. 04-07 years were a mix of midschool/newschool design. Anything after 08 seems to be newschool all the way. 04 Omen compared to my 2012 Wtp Warriors. The Omen is not finished yet. http://uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/97161/20190512_1057165ce13ccec9.jpg

Re: COMPARING NEW SKOOL

for me, its more about the front 14mm axle. when that went away is when ns starts for me.

integrated headsets was more of a race thing. not saying park doesnt use it now. but the early stuff was on race frames. same with the euro bb, thats a straight up race thing. i think all race frames are euro now.
but thats the common change across the board is the 14mm front axle has become obsolete, taking the 14mm drop out fork with it! so thats why i kinda lean towards the 14mm front axle as being the cut off for ms.

Re: COMPARING NEW SKOOL

Interesting. I knew there were more characteristics that separated MID and NEW SKOOL.
So, 2012 would pretty much be like current stuff?

Re: COMPARING NEW SKOOL

im not sure exsactly when the 14mm thing went away. again, its only the way i look at it. most of what i get is from selling. and all i know, is at some point 14mm front hubs worthless. theres bearly a market for 14mm front and rear hub sets. i have litterally moved all my solo front 14mm hubs out to the shed because of the lack of interest in them. so surely, it has to be the end off ms and the tank bikes.

also, its about the time 48s went away as well.

Would say 05 to 06 is when the big new school changes started. Things got significantly lighter and sometimes sorta sketchy lol

Re: COMPARING NEW SKOOL

I get the weight savings, but I noticed 3/8 axles always bent on me while doin flatland stuff, and that's when I was a kid. Yes, part of the issue which I corrected was thinner rear drop outs. So, I'm wondering is bending axles no longer an issue today (considering most of us have ..weight gain lol)?
And what was wrong with 14mm HOLLOW AXLES? They had the weight savings but as far as I know, had more strength..

3'8 axles on NS bikes today are different. If 3'8 axles are used on a front or rear hub,it is 99% a female style hub,the inner axle will be 17mm in diameter. The 3'8 bolts are all heatreated, trust me you won't be bending anything. If the pros of toaday are not bending their axles while doing the insane tricks they do,you and the rst of us mere mortals will be fine.

The female axle design, front and rear solved all the issues.

I just bought an '11 Haro, it has a 14mm rear axle and 3/8" front. I'm guessing it's a lower end bike, but NS. New to this NS stuff, and don't see many BMX of any kind in the Kootenays, so I'm learning from what I see here and other online resources.

If NS riders ate not breaking them, you won't either. These riders are riding off buildings and jumping like 25 ft on trails riding with no issues. Not all NS female axles are 17mm inner, some are 18mm and 20mm.But 17mm being the most common size.
