Might even have the head scratching how did those bikes win at either of the above mentioned shows.
Just build the bike for you and enjoy it. Ride it or not doesn't make a difference to me. I say that because I know a few who enjoy the bikes but can't ride them for various reasons.

yup one guy say spends years tracking down parts to build as close to a new 1984 BMX as he could. another guy spent years finding and throwing on every supper rare part his wallet could afford to his BMx. yet the show win. went to a guy egged on by those friends last minute to attend the show. he stops at a gas station another friends got to pee bad. while waiting he surfs the local Craigs list adds for bikes. spots a BMX under a pile of junked bikes in a back yard. covered in leaves  and weeds growing threw it. he calls buys the bike. do's not even remove the weds growing threw the spokes of wheel.  airs the tires up when they get to the show and won fist place!

Yeah not quite.... but there are some head shakers for sure!

It is all for fun, making connections and memories

no that really happened a guy showed up with a rusty bmx with weeds growing out of it. he bought it the day of the show on the way there. did not clean it and one his class. I cant remember the brand bike. but the judges gave it the win.

and who can for get the JMC race. bike that beat out all the Hutch trick stars , GT performers, Dyno's , profile prostylers and other freestyle bikes for the win.  just because the judges liked it better for some resins. even though the JMC had no rotor/gyro, no pegs IE no freestyle specific made parts. yet won freestyle class.
so ya my point being don't go to try and win.  build what you like. bring it along to see how many others like it just have fun!

Build your bikes the way you would have built them BITD. There is no telling what judges would favor that particular day. It would totally depend on their mood or if they have PMS that day.

Also depends on the show. Whenever I attend, I observe how judges do their judging. On the Gary Turner shows, they seem to go for more technicality, like checking if your tires are aired properly, spoke tensions, brakes are dialed, seat guts not moving, brake calipers closing evenly, brake pads touching the rims at the same time, chain tensioned properly, cranks spinning smoothly, etc. The BMX Society shows seem to lean towards originality and history and less on technicalities.

but it wasin catch all do to people wanting to now how a brand new Retro 26" beat beat out a real 26" OS 83/84 GT for best of show or in cruiser class  roll so they put it were it gets seen most catch all.

Re: Bmx show 101

My first and only time I’ve won was at the BMX Reunion show in Cedar Rapids IA last year. I built my bike up with mostly era correct parts, some repop, but it’s also my daily rider. I put a lot of miles on this thing. This was the first show I’ve been to where it was judged by just 2-3 dudes instead of ballets where 20 of your buddies can vote for your bike because they like you. Grant it, there wasn’t a ton of bikes there for competition but I still feel like it was a good win because it wasn’t a popularity contest. Moral of the story-build it how you want. Don’t worry about winning. If you win, you win. If you don’t oh well. I just love going to shows and talking BMX and having fun. http://uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/95057/c46aa98b-4d0b-4d0c-9ff3-346c6be95fe85c65eca441.jpeg

I did like that at the Rad show last year, I saw one of the judges checking the brakes on the bikes to see that they worked properly. I feel like even if your not going to ride your bike, it should at least be built to ride, not everything finger tight, no grease, cables not attached, etc. Like the cars that I have seen at lowrider shows that get pushed off and on a trailer, never actually starting or running... come on roll

This is proof enough the judges at that show had no business jidging anything or knew nothing about bmx in general.

Re: Bmx show 101

When I first built my retro Skyway (2013?) I took it to a local show along with a pretty rare mid/new school bike. I was surprised that the mid school got no attention but the Skyway ended up winning the cruiser class against some nice OG cruisers?? Made no sense to me but it was a peoples choice with a bunch of non bmx people and I guess they just liked the bling? Its like when I'm riding my retro Trickstar that gets a bunch of attention... Casual riders are not aware that there is such a thing as a retro Hutch, I've had a bunch of people think it was an 80s Hutch until I point out the obvious differences. neutral Trophies are fun to get but really don't mean much, just have a good time. cool
