1981 RRS Racing 24

First 24" BMX Racing Cruiser

This is one of those bike that I've always wanted. Riverside Schwinn was my "go to" shop when I need or "wanted" something that was a bit more exotic than my down the street shop had. Riverside shop was only a couple more miles away, but when you're a kid a couple miles is a long way. A lot of the guys I went to school with were on Team RRS and they always had the coolest bikes. I was always very envious! Even though I was riding a Gary Turner at the time. smile Anyway, so as luck and $ would have it, I came across this f/f with the OG eccentric BB and cantis. I was stoked to say the least! This is a great handling bike with lots of innovations that were way ahead of their time. I dig it!

Re: 1981 RRS Racing 24

KICK-ASS.

This, to me, is the kind of bike that the BMXMuseum should display and showcase.  Most excellent.  I would gladly trade several of my bikes for this one.

RRS' were way ahead of their time in my opinion with the brakes, 24" sizing, etc.

Thank you for sharing this bike with us.  Instantly on my FAVs list.

Re: 1981 RRS Racing 24

Do any of you remember the crew at Riverside Schwinn back in 1979-'81?  Do you remember when Craig ran the store?  I would love to hear stories about your memories of dealing with Craig.

I would also like to know the whereabouts of the following people that used to frequent the shop:

Mike Miranda
Joe Claveau
Kirk Claveau
Kevin McMNeal
Lee Medlin
Geoff Rutherford
Dirk Davidow
Denny Davidow
Danny Wall
Keith Peel
Tony (First RRS factory cruiser racer that was picked up by GT after the Anaheim indoor national in 1980, I think)
Mike McCue

Does anyone remember Sam?  He was killed in a car crash (an MG, I think) in '79 or thereabouts.  He designed the RRS logo.

I hope this is a good place to mention this.  If not please steer me in the right direction.

Thanks!

Rick

Re: 1981 RRS Racing 24

Well right off the bat I noticed the canti brakes on a 81 then the bottom bracket and drop outs both front and rear...In my head I'm already thinking innovative beyond its years even by today's standards but then to read the info on the RRS bike shop and the story about the BMX part ideas sprouting legs and showing up a few weeks later with another company's name on it (Mustache Bars) I'm completely smitten by the RRS cruiser and the shop and all the stories behind it. With that said I have just found my GRAIL though I fear I may never know the joy of riding one of my own.

Re: 1981 RRS Racing 24

Remember going to the races BITD seeing a local hot shoe with a JMC 24 and thought that was an exotic race bike. Later that season he switched to an RRS 24...think he even had a set of Flights on his bike with Phil Wood hubs. Talk about a bike that would stop you in it's tracks.  This ROCK's!!! cool cool
