82 GT Pro “Touch Up”

Since I didn’t have enough projects torn down in the garage I figured I’d add this one to the mix.

Back Story:
My father bought this from a friend of his for me in about 1996. At the time it was chrome. Had blue tires, blue kashimax seat, Blue brakes and cable, blue sprocket, and gold shimano pedals.  It was in pretty rough shape. Dry tires, brakes not the greatest, bad pedal bearings, rusty bars, flaking chrome. So we wanted to fix it up after a couple of years of me thrashing around the neighborhood on it. So we went to the local Schwinn store in Conroe, Texas and bought some new parts. New brakes, tires, pedals, grips, seat and handle bars.

I originally painted it to mimic the GT thermoplastic prototype I saw in BMX PLUS! earlier that year. But then painted it white and black. Rode it for a week then bought a new 98 Schwinn Predator for my birthday. This one went in the attic and sat there until I pulled it back out in February. It sat in my garage since.

Plans:

There’s a small old school show in Houston next week so I figured I’d touch this up a bit to bring before I tear it down later this year for a full Re-chrome and mild restoration.

I’m doing things like getting a new seat, cleaning some rust, headbadge sticker, passer etc for this show.

Re: 82 GT Pro “Touch Up”

On Monday I put it on my bench stand and took the stem off to strip the paint I applied over 20 years ago, hoping it was still in as gold as I thought it was.

Well it wasn’t.

Started a ID thread on here and found out it’s an early non stamped Tuf Neck. So the plan for this show is to just hold metal cast it (it can always be stripped off) and I ordered a repop Tuf Neck sticker for it. Hope To do that this weekend.

Top cap seems to have a nasty crack but this isn’t going to be a rider so should be just fine.http://uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/239931/e18e9dea-1c93-47ac-92f6-bdcfec8cffd85c5e4babde.jpeg

When I rechrome the frame and fork (and bars when I find them in dads garage) I want to break the wheels down and either polish or chrome the rims and have built with new spikes as they are pretty rusty. I might see how well I can clean the spikes up with Scott brite or something.

Re: 82 GT Pro “Touch Up”

Let’s say I didn’t rechrome and powdered the frame white.

Should I do the forks white or black? I’m
Putting black bars on it until I can find some chrome gt Pro bars in my price range

I think the frame and forks should match on a gt.

So then white bars too or would chrome bars look ok with a chrome seat post?

With white frame and fork chrome bars and post would work.

Re: 82 GT Pro “Touch Up”

These tires are super dry and was going to buy some comp iii reissues.

Were skinny/fat combos a thing in early 80’s? Or was that a 90’s thing

2.125 front,1.75 rear was pretty much standard in the 80's.

Chrome bars would look great imo. White bars and seat post would look too. That is if you have to refinish the bars and post.

At least you test fit the sticker before sticking it on.....you did right loltongue

You can fix it by carefully trimming some of the black outside circle material off. If you notice the one in the earlier pic, it has a thinner outer black border. So just trim it evenly and will be perfect.

Re: 82 GT Pro “Touch Up”

Idk what the hell I was thinking when I busted out the paint stripper.  Now I’ve forced myself to rush a build I didn’t want to rush. Was just going to add a few pieces for this show. Not taking frame and fork to powder.

Which isn’t that big of a deal but it’s gohng to drive me crazy to reassemble some of the pieces that aren’t how I want them. Most importantly the wheels. Wanted to break them down and polish or chrome the rims rims and rear lace with new spokes. Not going to happen in time for the show I’m bringing it to in March.http://uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/239931/84a5fe98-e5f8-4fc1-ba69-2e46d41b9eaf5c633b8a65.jpeg

Re: 82 GT Pro “Touch Up”

Honest opinion, fellas.

Tuf neck stem cooler as is, or try to refinish it?

I’ve got new gold dia compe brakes and seat post clamp. So I’ll have different shades of gold ano going, but really, the stem is so far gone it’s hard to even call it gold.
