I NEED A NEW VEHICLE! SUGGESTIONS!

So I am looking for a new vehicle (used - 2016-2018 model year)

It turns out the repair shop who worked on my steering rack didn't flush the power steering fluid and destroyed the entire system, $2800 repair bill at the Honda dealer right now - I'm working with his insurance company and/or warranty company for Advanced Auto on getting the car repaired.

Criteria:
Good utility for outdoor stuff
Decent MPG  20 city/25 hwy or better
30,000 miles or less
Good reliability ratings
$30,000 or less.
Preferably a car that's spent its life below the mason dixon (no salt)
the closer to raleigh durham the better but willing to fly to the right car.

So I began my car search by wanting a Toyota Tacoma crew cab, but every dealer I've dealt with has insisted on asking price which I just refuse to do.  I'd like the V6 version in Quicksand paint.

My other choice was the Subaru Crosstrek in Hyper Blue or Orange.  I have yet to test drive that but I love the stance and utility of it.

I really can't think of anything I like so that's why I ask for suggestions from the gallery.

thanks!

Re: I NEED A NEW VEHICLE! SUGGESTIONS!

Can't go wrong with a Toyota, Taco's hold there value that's why dealers overprice them just be patient and keep searching and you'll find a good deal.

I had 2 Tacoma's and loved them I had a 13 Taco that averaged about 21mpg and a 17 Taco that I could get 23+ mpg but that was pussy footing it.

I know have a 18 Corolla and get 36+ mpg without even trying (but I miss my Tacomas)

Solid advice for sure. I agree on resale value.

Toyota
Subaru
Jeep
Dodge
Would be my choices.
Cars built after 2009 are mainly throw away cars. They don't build them to last anymore. Unfortunately all are engineered with timed obsolescence in mind. hmm

Re: I NEED A NEW VEHICLE! SUGGESTIONS!

I only buy Toyota for daily drivers. Camry get crazy fuel mileage.  Corolla also. I have both. My 2018 Camry with bigger engine get close to 40mpg highway. 2014 corolla is a bit behind. Crazy how 4 years newer goes. Must be the 0w16 oil. Lol

I was considering a Dodge Ram Promaster.

I test drove another Tacoma in Winston Salem NC last night and man I fell in love with it, I love the line of sight and the dash, everything about it.   They just won't budge a dollar on price.

Re: I NEED A NEW VEHICLE! SUGGESTIONS!

Well FJ's stopped production in 2014, so that's out.  CrossTrek is probably a solid choice.  Might also consider a CH-R or HR-V?  Maybe even a 4-runner?

Apart from Jeep though, I don't think there's only a handfull of body-on-frame SUV's.  So most SUV's will leave you wanting for trails work.

Ha...oh he'll no! Had a 6cyl. 2012 camry before it was like 15mpg. Never again. I custom ordered my 2018 loaded with everything except I wanted a 4 banger. New engine design for 2018. Even got the 2 tone with glass roof. 19k trouble free miles so far. Been hit twice though...once 2nd day with 30 miles in a parking lot!

Re: I NEED A NEW VEHICLE! SUGGESTIONS!

The Toyota styling has gotten more taseful for sure.

I did like the FJ's but man they are even bigger gas pigs than the Tacoma smile

I have considered 4 Runners too but man those are like Land Rovers now - a status symbol and pricey.

There are a few out there under $30,000 esp if they were rental cars (no thanks!).

I was looking at the Rav 4 last night and they make that in the bright blue which was pretty sweet.  $31,000 though.

A Toyota in a tuxedo, that's what I tell my girl she has a 2010 RX350 with over a 110k on the clock and the thing drives like a dream!

I would stay away from new Dodge and Jeep considering they are owned by Fiat, as far as the "death wobble" you mentioned that only applied to lifted Jeep wranglers and that's because they were lifted half-ass and not the right way. I had a Rubicon and believe me that ride gets old real fast, if you do get a wrangler get Wrangler LJ (long jeep) long wheelbase or the JKU 4dr wrangler they both give better rides.

Yeah those death wobbles are actually fairly easy to remedy. Have only seen a couple of them actually do that.
In the 80's and 90's things were still maintainable. Being able grease suspensions for example. I never heard that about the 80's. I didn't see it then, but I see it today. I've been working on cars for 35 years.

Last summer I had to replace every balljoint, steering stabilzer and shocks to get rid of the death wobble on a friends lifted Jeep JK.Every balljoint was shot when I too it out.

Thanks it dropped in price $700 over night so I'm gonna wait a few more days and see what happens.

In other news:  I hired an attorney today to deal with Nationwide and them trying to blame the Florida Tuffy for my steering rack power steering pump issues.   lol what a joke.

I was expecting the lawyer to say "well you don't have enough evidence, thanks for coming"

Exact opposite.  I know that doesn't guarantee victory but I think we're in good shape and it'll be a bigger settlement if all goes well and more down payment cash.

In short, the steering rack killed 2 power steering pumps.  And it was determined the reservoir was never flushed and the metal flakes in it destroyed the system.  $2800 repair at the dealer.

So we wait for Nationwide to make up their mind on what they're gonna do.   I hope this shit goes to trial.   I welcome it.

Saturday's agenda:

More test drives.

I'm gonna go drive a Crosstrek and an Outback from Subaru I think.   I'm a little concerned about their reliability.
