Re: Finally got my hands on a 97...

Got the bars and forks cleaned. Tried a few things on the frame with no luck. Tried lemon juice, vinegar, and a aluminum cleaner. Next I’m going to try alumibright, it’s for boat trailers and it works awesome on my dirtbike restorations I’ve done. Going to test it on another frame and see what happens. If not it might have to be hand polished then I can dull it some. The oxidation is to heavy for my liking. http://uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/234558/97943679-e3c2-4011-9165-e965257172f45c1505a55f.jpeg

Re: Finally got my hands on a 97...

This is the finish I’m after. This is Aaron’s 97 listed here in the museum. It was a new left over frame that he recently built up.

Re: Finally got my hands on a 97...

Hand polishing is most definitely in order.  These things didn't come out of the factory looking like they were laying in a shed for 20 years.  (Not saying yours looks bad, but that you are not going to be able to get it looking "too good" with a hand polish).

Hutch Fun Facts: All main line Hutch's with digits only S/N (no letters or baseballs) on the rear drop outs were US made and had their dropouts stamped between late '83 and '86.  Obviously the frame manufacture would occur slightly after that, even if they just threw 'em in a bucket randomly.  There is an obvious date code in that the first 2 digits seem to be the month and the 3rd digit is pretty obviously the last digit of the year running from '83-'86.

That's a hell of a way to pay me back.....unless you are prettier than I imagined...?

I'd feel great if this ultimately works out for you.

Re: Finally got my hands on a 97...

I never heard back from that company so I decided to hit it with some mothers and a rag. Once I get the decals on I’ll post more pictures. There was 3 different decals on the headtube, still need to work on that area. http://uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/234558/b73145ef-ecf8-4f97-9244-513200b95e985c36dec73d.jpeg

Re: Finally got my hands on a 97...

Nice Jesse, I remember selling these at the shop I worked at when I was in high school, they weren't crazy expensive, we use to thrash them on a 1/4 pipe behind the shop.
Didn't know you like these, I got one in a box in my shed.

Re: Finally got my hands on a 97...

nice, a box is still something im after. it probably wont be an actual speed series, but i'll do the 97 speed team look, and build it the same as a 97 speed team, but in black like gary ellis' bike.

I’m in the process of building a 98 speed series XXL Ellis replica also.http://uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/234558/233fcf9b-b713-4bc9-ad84-f0faf34236a95c3a6c8868.jpeg

Re: Finally got my hands on a 97...

Wow.  That's exact.

What I love is that he used 97 decals on his 98.

This thread is going to make me snatch up a power series 3.0 frame. right now. LOL.

I'll be on the look out for your bikes for sure. Literally my favorite year for bikes is 1997, and nearly all my grails are 97 versions of bikes. Especially the PFT, and Speed. When the title said 97, I HAD to look.
