Finally got my hands on a 97...

My buddy “accidentally” found this while looking for 80s performers. He sent it to me asking what it was. My mouth hit the floor! When I seen the pictures. I told him how long I’ve been looking for one to complete my speed series collection. Without hesitation he drove 2 hours each way and picked it up for me.. how COOL is that?!?

Here she is. She’s a little odd with her serial number location. Normally they are stamped on the inner dropout but this on is on the bottom of the dropout. Also the only one I’ve ever seen with a T before the XL stamp.

Re: Finally got my hands on a 97...

Woh, that SN is really interesting.

Hutch Fun Facts: All main line Hutch's with digits only S/N (no letters or baseballs) on the rear drop outs were US made and had their dropouts stamped between late '83 and '86.  Obviously the frame manufacture would occur slightly after that, even if they just threw 'em in a bucket randomly.  There is an obvious date code in that the first 2 digits seem to be the month and the 3rd digit is pretty obviously the last digit of the year running from '83-'86.

That’s what I was thinking because it’s not early enough to say they were playing with the idea of the location. The earliest 97 team frame I’ve seen is Aaron’s (10/96) and his is inside the dropout.

Got it apart and cleaned. I don’t want to go with the full polished look. I want to keep it as original as possible. No repop decals either wink Not sure if I want to do a catalog build on this Speed Series or not... maybe a period correct build. smile

Re: Finally got my hands on a 97...

GT frames of that era were so nicely fabricated. My GT Show must have been massively expensive to produce compared to modern bmx frames.

Nice bro. I like the og finish idea, i regret polishing my 96 and the ub. Keeping up with polish is more work than i want to do, and you just never get that og ball burnish back. Aaron got pretty creative with his tho rite? Bringing back the original finish look?

The one he just got is the OG finish. It’s like new! The other one is polished for the most part. We have some ideas to try and save this one.

1000% agree on leaving the finish original.  see way to many shiny speed series these days already.
I am curious to know what brainstorming you guys have cooked up to save it.
Have a feeling it was stamped late on a friday after the fellas went to the bar instead of a restaurant for lunch.  tongue
that T stamps location and appearance makes me think it is aftermarket and not from factory. In person (on my phones screen) does it appear to be from the same stamping tool as your other speed series or does it look custom? is the frame cnc'd? what about the  butting? I am sure you have already check all the angles and lengths to make sure it was not a one off made for a factory workers personal taste.

All that being said i love oddballs and am glad it ended up somewhere i know it will get the proper treatment it deserves.

I’ll know more when I can get it side by side with another 97.(hopefully Saturday) My 98 is a xxl so it will be hard to go off that one. After cleaning it, the serial looks factory. The normal location doesn’t have any sanding or worn areas. I was thinking that late in the year (0697, June of 97) they are getting ready to start production on 98s. So they could have toyed with the idea of this spot. Stamp style, font and size match all my other ones. In 97 they had a non team frame and the box frame was the team... so it could have been a simple T for the team frame. But who really knows right? Lol. http://uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/234558/edafa470-1ddc-425b-982e-1254512e69c55c124af66f.jpeg
