Re: First bikes that blew your mind?

Good question.

1986 Diamond Back Strike Zone with Mike D bars.  Grey with neon orange graphics, mags, and a Rotor. At 10 I wouldn't have been more impressed if we'd found a crashed UFO. It seemed so futuristic. Owned by the local rich kid.  He didn't really know what to do with it though, he didn't have much skill on the bike. We had a vague idea that bikes could be used to do stunts but apart from jumping, all we could do was speculate. I hadn't even seen a BMX magazine at that point. But that one was my first contact into all this mess. smile

The next one changed everything. Chrome '87-'88 PFST (no stickers) w ACS 45 stem, gyro, straight post, chrome Super Pros, Suntour coaster, RL Edge tires, ODI signature grips, Tech 77's, GT pegs, gyro, 990 rear and Nippon front, Kneesaver bars (black and chrome), GT seat, DX pedals.  So badass.  The guy who owned it was the best rider in the city. Decades, backside walkarounds, hang nothings, double whiplashes dump trucks, wall rides...I was 12 and it influenced bikes I build and the way I ride to this day. I had been into bike riding for about a year before that, but that was the first time I had seen it done at a fairly high level on a regular basis and in person.

Re: First bikes that blew your mind?

First time I saw an aluminum 2-Hip Pork in a Ride BMX magazine I dreamed about owning one! I loved the huge tubes and pierced head tube. The fact that it came in aluminum was a big part of it because all of my buddies and I always ripped on friends that had aluminum bikes but I secretly always wanted one ha ha

Re: First bikes that blew your mind?

In 1994 I worked at my LBS (Bicycle Bills) in St. Paul Minnesota. The owner had two sons which one raced. That's when I saw a Haro Monocoque for the 1st time in the flesh that we built up for his sons upcoming season. I was dead set on getting one myself, but with a limited run I got a Group 1 instead. Made damn sure I was getting a 2nd gen in 96 and I've have had 3 to this day.

I had a mongoose and Keith had a torker. Then Chuck rolled up on a PK Ripper!!! Loved it!! Saw the quadangle in a magazine! Loved the SE lineup. Always wanted a PK ripper. Didn’t own one until ‘05 or so.

Re: First bikes that blew your mind?

Hutch Expert.  Was building my first BMX which was a Schwinn.  The project was slow going and found this chrome complete for $25. This was probably 12-13 years ago.

I didn’t know what it was until I started riding it and doing some research.  That bike is long gone but I’ve been a hutch guy ever since.

Winter of 1982 and the Redline 600a ad. If I had straight A's the spring semester of 83, mom said she would buy me one. I got it that summer. wink

Re: First bikes that blew your mind?

I was 11 and the '82 Mongoose/Supergoose ads in BMXA opened a door for me that would never close.

Then, in '84 when I saw the BMXA Trick Team and RL's white Redline ProStyler in person....

I've been a mess ever since.big_smile

Re: First bikes that blew your mind?

I saw a Suzuki bike in the dealership when they first came out. That yellow & black was just awesome. At 13 as a freshman I bought one from a classmate for $100.00.

Then the Quadangle came out and it was all over. First saw it in a magazine. I got a red 81 frame for Christmas  just after I turned 15. Still have it but I don’t remember it being so small then lol

Re: First bikes that blew your mind?

Few early memories

Neighbor got a red huffy monoshock  yikes
I remember going with my mom to bike shop to get something...in the front widow was a blue PeddlePower....man I wanted that SO BAD!

My bro soon got a red mongoose with ashtabula parts and tuffs.. WOW!
We found a Blue Torker in my grandmas basement (it was hidden there by my uncle) a Christmas gift for my cousin.

Then while at the local dirt jump a guy rides up on a yellow and blue DG. I still remember the forks were chrome.  Double wow !!

Not soon after two bro;s showed up with matching Stormers
So my neighbor not to be outdone shoes up on a white and red Redline Proline  V-BARS!  coolcoolcool

My soccer buddy was really succesful racer on a FMF jr. pro with aluminum Matthew forks- that things light as a feather!

Then later the freestyle stuff came out....loved it.  Big memory there was my buddy ordered a Haro Master from a magazine. I was at his house when it showed up and we put it together. Green/Blue / White tuffs  We had never seen a Gyro before- that bike was awesome !

Oh and my Vector- them bars ! smile

good times !

Re: First bikes that blew your mind?

1975 Huffy Thunder Road.  Matte black with front and side numberplates, MX style fenders, big MX style seat and a crossbar.  Luckily, I found it a few months before my birthday.  My parents hooked me up.  My brothers were so jealous they both got them for Christmas but mine was a model year earlier.  That damn Huffy and I had a lot of adventures and the fuse was lit.

Re: First bikes that blew your mind?

Probably my mate's chrome and blue Diamond Back, guessing it was a Medium Pro.
Chrome with blue Skyway II's and pads.
It would've been say 1983-1984, can't remember, only vaguely remember the timeline.
I often wonder if he still might have it..................?

1980 Race Inc.

I had just upgraded from a Schwinn Scrambler to a Mongoose. So, I took my new goose up to our one of our local trails and thought I was hot Sh!t…That was 'til some kid rolled up on a Candy Red race Inc. yikes
The welds, the downtube bend back to the BB and lower gusset. I was blown away. I still don't own a Race Inc. but I regard that frame as BMX art.
