2018 GT Pro Performer 26

You know? Heritage 2018 GT Pro Performer in DayGlo Pink

As a child growing up and falling in love with a GT Pro Freestyle Tour....I saved every penny to purchase my own. In 1988, I went to my local bike shop (name withheld out of respect) and told the owner I wanted a GT PFT. The bike shop owner said “Great, what color”? I said DayGlo Pink. He retorted, “I won’t sell a pink bike to a boy”. So
Chrome it was! The bike was equipped with a Dyno pretzel handlebars and a Dyno drainpipe seat post. It had mags and I swapped them out for Perigrine rims. Oh the memories that were made. The tricks I learned. Flash forward to today I’m all grown up and have a family of my own. Then GT released the Heritage line, I patiently wait for a 26” in DayGlo Pink. Here we go!Video belowhttps://youtu.be/BwbQi9GlkOQ

Re: 2018 GT Pro Performer 26

Can you lead me where can I buy the gyro, cables and gyro tabs?

Are you going to do front brake?

I have pink dayglo here as well, that’s why I asked.https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/220860/796e637c-776e-4a57-bd65-2542ef58d1a45bc9247d9e.png

Re: 2018 GT Pro Performer 26

Jamoranger3,

The Odyssey gyro, cables, tabs and upper plate all came from EBay. Various vendors and the white cables from Australia, of all places. They are listed in my spec lines under the bike. Basically a new odyssey gyro GTX-S. The G3 upper plate. Gyro tabs I used mission removable tabs from kink. The cables are Odyssey as well and the lengths are listed in the specs. Now perhaps you can get a Gyro kit that includes some or most of the parts but I did it separately.

I did do the front brake! I’ll put the pics in later but it came out nice! I used the old rear brake cable off the bike to make the front brake cable (don’t butcher it or discard it when you take it off). The fronts brakes are Dia Compe 883 and Tech 77 levers. You need a larger starnut with a through hole to send the front cable through. BlackOps makes one for $6.00 with a larger through hole. Upper cap has a white triangle on it.

Drill the starnut out with a 3/8” drill until it collapses and remove the pieces with a pair of needle nose. Cover everything you don’t need slivers inside the head tube bearings.

Use the provided screw and carefully tap the new starnut down the tube from the top making sure it’s straight. Go down about 1/2”-3/4” from the top. It’s pretty intuitive.

Any questions just ask me!

Is the gyro with bearing steel? Does it have rubber or plastic that powder shop would melt it? I asked because I want it to be white. Black looks funny to me. Btw I’m building mine as well but I’m very picky. Lol

Jammy,

The Odyssey gyro GTS-X has the aluminum with rubber seals. I don’t think you can successfully paint it without ruining it.

Good luck with your build!

Re: 2018 GT Pro Performer 26

I was not sure where to post this so I figured I would do it here in case people searched for the type of bike it would bring them to this thread.

DO NOT attempt to install a Dia Compe 990 rear brake on the new Heritage 26" GT bikes. I tried and there was interference from the lower nuts that retain the brake pads in place and the frame near the chain stays. I thought I could make some shims to raise the brake assembly up on the mounting posts but no matter what I did the brake would bind and lock when I tightened the retaining screws. I eventually gave up. I have a 1987 GT PFT TM that I recently purchased and I looked at the original 990 and they are fairly identical in design. GT lists "Springfield Odyssey Brake" ready somewhere in literature. Perhaps that brake would work on the 26" Pro Performers.

Just letting you know.

As a last note...somewhere in the forum was a post regarding DG Pink touch up paint and nail polish. That was brilliant and I can't thank them enough for that tip. So if you need to "touch up" the new DG Pink on your 26" or 29" GT Pro Performer, find and purchase Wet N Wild Fergie Fergalicious A016 (WWA016) Nail polish. If you are down to the bare metal you will need some white base paint before applying this. I bet white nail polish would work and it did. I tried it and it and it came out amazing!

Re: 2018 GT Pro Performer 26

.
Nice story and nice bike big_smile

Relating to your comment to the impossible mounting of a DC990 I bet that the reason is the partially bad build quality hmm
For example: there was no problem for me to mount a DC990 on my white 2017 Performer model.
But this model is identical to the 2018 model, with the exception of the missing holes inside the steering tube for gyro sockets.

I also have a chromed 2012 and a  - just recently bought - chromed 2018 model of the 26" Performer.
On all newer models I detect that for example the direction of the mounting holes of the fork for the front brake is horizontal slanting.
Try yourself: put a stick throught the bores and compare his direction with the front wheel.

I've ordered the 2018 model three times(!), because all showed partially flaws of the chrome or even already rust.
Particluar the fork seems to be a problem, because most flaws I've found were on the bended shoulders of the arms.
Not sure, but it seems, that the chromed 2018 model has an additional clear coat, so the flaws could be only inside those coat.
In addition some models had variyng distances between the seat stays and the end section of the upper tube behind the seat tube.
In fact the cross struts between the end section of the upper tube and the seat stays showed different lengh (+/- 5mm).

But to conclude, for me the 26" Pro Performer is very sweet to look at and to ride!
I've never regretted buying all these models and enjoy every ride outside.

Congrats to your purchase of the Performer!

Re: 2018 GT Pro Performer 26

I am in the process of getting all the odyssey gyro, brake levers, and brake calipers for my build now. Can you talk me through the Potts mod.  I’m confused by it as your seem to have modded your original setup where others have just purchased new pieces. I’d prefer to purchase new pieces and replace in case somehow I were to screw up. Hardest part I’m running into at the moment is finding the white odyssey gyro cables. Thanks in advance.

So the story is you will need a new Starnut and stem screw. I believe I pointed out where I got mine from in the thread. You will have to drill the old starnut out to get it free. It’s easy.

Then install the new starnut (same concept as Potts Mod vs non Potts Mod, the old hardware won’t support a 5mm cable running through it and the new bolt to support the cable won’t fit inside the original GT starnut).

Anyway you put your Gyro tabs on. Detangler and upper plate....install the stem and new stem cap and screw. The feed your upper cable through and route it to the brake.

My white cables came from Australia. Got them off EBay.

Regards,

Tony

Re: 2018 GT Pro Performer 26

I wonder if Porkchop cables would work!?!? Let me see if I have any lower cables here and check for you. They usually come with both sets of G1 and G2/G3 barrel adjuster sizes.

Re: 2018 GT Pro Performer 26

Yes, Porkchop BMX offers “Odyssey Gyro” upper and lower cables that will work. In fact the G3 gyro uses the same barrel adjusters as the G1 gyro.

I just checked and I don’t see why you can’t use them. No Odyssey sticker of course but you are riding this bike not representing 1987.

Re: 2018 GT Pro Performer 26

Pegs have to be “new school” style. The hubs are female threads on the new GT. So the bolt has to go into the hollow peg and engage the hub threads.

I used Black Ops pegs.
