Re: My son's Birthday Present

I think this thing spent the majority of its life outdoors.  I thought the rim strips were black/gold, but they are actually blue/red.

Re: My son's Birthday Present

So I disassembled it minus the headset and bottom bracket cups. Gave it a really quick wipe-down. This thing is crusty.

Re: My son's Birthday Present

The drops seem to be a bit mangled. Hard to see in pics.http://uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/27489/img_20180804_1302116935b65dca7de.jpg
http://uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/27489/img_20180804_1303148315b65dcc290.jpg

I think the seat mast is crimped also. I don't see any cracks.

Re: My son's Birthday Present

I've been using vinyl foil film for rim strips. Its for automotive use. Cool stuff. I use aluminum tape on back side to do the heating process. Works good imo.

Another interesting tidbit with this bike. The remnants of grip tape exist on the matchbox. Seems like an impromtu early freestyle mod.http://uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/27489/img_20180804_1027431475b68ddcfe2.jpg

Anyone have any good advice for fixing the seatpost mast?

Re: My son's Birthday Present

I'v heard about special steel balls calibrated to tight tolerances being used.  In other words, a 7/8" hardened steel ball forced down the mast will open it up to the correct diameter.  I might be making that up. lol

Re: My son's Birthday Present

Nobody knows how to open up a crushed seatmast? This is the size of the post that was in it.

Re: My son's Birthday Present

My Hutch Pro Racer’s seat tube was crimped at the slot- no key hole.  I fixed it.

Place as large of a diameter thick walled pipe or seat post that you can into the seat post tube.  Coat the shit out of the outside of the crimped area with a bar of soap such as Dial or Coast.  Using a small hammer (I used the brass face of my gunsmithing hammer), start lightly hitting the outside of the tube.  As you work your way to the crimp, you should see it start to disappear.  If the top starts to flare, just tap it back.

The key is a lot of light hits with the hammer as you work out the crimp.

I hope this helps.

I believe he knows his son and that his son would want this bike to call his own.

Re: My son's Birthday Present

If you can find one of these that's 7/8's diameter, this would be another option - looks like it's just the top of the mast that's crimped by where the seat clamp was. Just run this down the tube with lube, it'll gradually open up any squished areas.

How do you know that isn't what his son wants?? There are kids out there that appreciate the time and patience it takes to rebuild things (bikes, cars, machines, whatever), and working with their hands (my own son included).

Fixer- what's the name of that tool? (not referring to Hawked tongue )  Looks like it may work.  Thanks everyone for replying with helpful suggestions.

...and for Hawked- my son is stoked to have this frame.  You couldn't be more wrong.  He was asking me at the last old school event (he goes to all of them) if we could upgrade his current ride.  He loves his old Mongoose, but wanted an old school chromoly Mongoose.  My son loves old school bikes and events and rides.  This is something we share together.  Does this kid look like he's upset with his old Mongoose?

yup well said if my dad took me to all the classic car shows as a really young kid. never took me to a new car dealer ships. only got hot rod magazines sent to the house. had me help work on his older cars. I would probably not get exited over brand new cars and want a older one for my first car.

he did not do that so my first car was a truck a S10  wish I still had it. it was sweet. but ya if my dad did that stuff with me. my fist  motor vehicle  might have been from the 60's , 70's  or older. wink

so this kid could really want this Mongoose bike.

on a side not my fist bicycle was a rescue from a garbage can on trash day. my dad found it. showed me how to tare it down. to bare bones. then we found a few other broken tossed out bikes. for the parts we need ed to fix the other bike. he teach me how to sand, primer and paint. when that bike was done looked every bit as nice as a new bike. maybe that why I can't leave a bike. I see pushed out curb side on trash days now. tongue thanks dad!
