The Goonies bike build (All of them)

As the title states, I will be making the effort to replicate all of the bikes to the best of my ability from the 1985 movie The Goonies.  I've been waiting for the right time to start this thread as I find it frustrating to start something and not be able to finish it in a reasonable time period.  This has been about a year in the making.  I'm still in the process of acquiring one maybe two of the bikes depending on how far I want to go with the (every bike) part of this build.  I'm hoping, maybe during the process of this I can get some of you members of the museum involved and we can figure some of the tricky (parts) out on some of these bikes.  I have done most of the research on this but there is still plenty to find out.

So, The plan is to start with one bike, go as far as I can with it then start another and so on.  The plan in the end will be to take the bikes the the 34th and or the 35th anniversary of the movie in Astoria, Oregon. https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/56712/goonies-movie-today-150603-tease_478da3c8deb81d8c654ca8fdc621c1d05b4c3df8d4.jpg

Re: The Goonies bike build (All of them)

So, Going threw what I have out there I think I will start with the Mikey build. I know.  It's been done roll But that's the reason to do it first.  Gotta keep my interest going till the end.
After this one though, if anyone would like to request witch to start next that would be cool.   I would like to personally thank two of our Bmxmuseum members for doing the Mikey build halsencrew and backtothe1980s have both been a great inspiration for this.  There was another guy who did the Mikey bike, maybe the first? Even got a shot of Sean Astin on it. I remeber seing that thread somewhere on the net quite a few years ago but I can't seem to find the story anymore.

Alright, here we go.  It all Starts here.

So, for those who have not yet started to build a bike from the past. It can be very time consuming and you may find that you have to purchase multiple bikes to get what you want.  That is where I landed with the Mikey bike.

I will also point out that the first bike I show you was not for the intent of this build. I just bought it because I knew the wheels where worth way more than the asking price. It wasn't till about a year later when I was on here looking at Mikey builds that I realized what I had.  I also thought the bike I bought was from the late eighties and that the wheels were not original to it.

So this bike is what started this build. What we have here is a 1984/85 ish maybe earlier Western Flyer Invader Mag. All original apart from the left grip, chain and rear tire. I will be using the wheels, rear tire and maybe the chain guard from this bike and that's it. lol https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/56712/20180715_1935135b4c4cee5b.jpg

Re: The Goonies bike build (All of them)

If I had not found this bike at the thrift store.  I most likely would have never done this build.  They wanted 39.99 for it but it was half off day, so it had to go in the truck.

Re: The Goonies bike build (All of them)

This brings me to another part of this build.  What oldschoolace has just pointed out.  Finding a Murray is easy.  Even and old BMX Murray is easy, but finding the right one is very hard.  At least for me. Once I figured out what frame I needed.  Wait.
I have to stop for a sec because I'm still not 100% on the frame I chose for this Mikey bike.  Here's why. Although all the other bikes in the movie are Murray's.  The bike that Mikey rides was not a stock bike. Maybe it is but you can't tell because it has no decals.  So at this point I will say it's most likely an early eighties team Murray or TRX. It may be a late seventies AMX that someone put 80's Murry parts on.  It's almost as if they went to a bike shop and they where one short of what they needed so they put something together from what they had. or maybe they wanted Mikey's bike to be more custom for some reason?  I think whoever was in charge of the bikes did put effort into making them fit the role. Within the time they had.
So, lol  When I new what bike I needed I came here first, of course but I didn't find just what I wanted so I went to ebay and found a nice TRX BUT.  He would not ship.  As I found with many people that were trying to sell old Murray's.  They post online but will not ship..mad  I did finally find what I was looking for on ebay and he would ship, but guess what.  He lived right down the steet. lol Two minute drive. Here it is. 1984 Team Murray Super Charged https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/56712/20180715_1937065b4c670bc2.jpg

Re: The Goonies bike build (All of them)

So this is what I needed right? Not all of it.  Here's what's coming off. wheels/tires, grips, bar pad, hand brake setup, rear reflector, chain wheel, fork and chain guard. I will get to use the chain guard on the Data bike though big_smile I think hmm lol

Re: The Goonies bike build (All of them)

So I still needed a chrome fork. Guess what. The guy had another Murray with the chrome fork I needed.  BAM.. I traded a couple old number plates for that bike. Here it is.  Update.
That fork ended up having a steer tube that was too short.  https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/56712/20180715_1936325b4c6ee0b7.jpg

Here is a question that some might be asking themselves.  Why would this guy go to the trouble of doing this.  This film encapsulates the urge to discover. Will it be there?  I don't know? The very essence of the film dares me to do this.

You could ask questions all day about why any of us do this.  I see a lot of people just building bikes with seemingly no vision or direction, just going through the motions which to me is not what this is about.  I appreciate your dedication and passion for seeing this through so I'm genuinely intrigued by your endeavor here.  Keep us posted cool

Re: The Goonies bike build (All of them)

I'm not even sure what bikes they're riding.  Glad you can tell.  Can you list them?

FWIW, Mikey's looks like it DEFINITELY has a chainguard in that pic.  Data's doesn't appear to have one.  In fact, Data's looks like it's the only one without a chainguard.
