New steel bikes?

So I am just getting back into racing after about a decade and a half. I am currently using my '99 SBC 125 and am thinking I should update my arsenal. Other than SBC and S&M, are there other manufacturers that are making stuff in steel - preferably in big sizes as I'm 6' 2".

Thanks!

Re: New steel bikes?

Cult and Subrosa make nice Chromoly race frames. Can get the Cult in a 21.8 tt, and Subrosa in a 21.5 tt. Might be a little short for you, but I’m sure there will more that chime in....

Re: New steel bikes?

Sure thing. Modern steel race frames I’m aware of:

Cult (also cruiser version)
https://cultcrew.com/collections/frames … race-frame

*Standard 125r (also cruiser and 26 versions, custom available he'll make pretty much what you want... disc brakes, colors, etc.)
http://www.standardbyke.com/125-r-series-race-frame/

S&M Bikes New "Steel Panther" (replacement model of the Speedwagon which was replacement for 38 Special)
https://www.sandmbikes.com/product/hard … her-frame/

Subrosa Speedwolf
https://shop.subrosabrand.com/subrosa-s … frame.html

*Laird (custom built to order) (likely he'll build you any size you want, custom colors and seatstay bridges, etc.)
https://lairdframe.com/

*F-bom (made for them by Standard, built to order, I emailed him 2018 still appear to be available)
https://fbombikes.bigcartel.com/about

Supercross SX450 (only make a small batch every 4 years, you snooze you lose) (cruiser and 26 sizes too) Some are still available Jan 2019!
https://www.supercrossbmx.com/collectio … race-frame

GT (interceptor) (made 2013 and 2015 but still readily available online very inexpensively)
https://www.powersbikeshop.com/collecti … race-frame

Curtis Bikes Motox Racelite (UK)
https://www.curtisbikes.co.uk/frames/motox-racelite-20/

Colony GTI MK1
http://colonybmx.com.au/products/gti-mk1-frame/

*Stout
http://stoutbikes.blogspot.com/p/custom-frames.html

Skyway (limited edition run of TA frames in 2017)
Appear to be sold out now were available through Planet BMX

Hutch (JDB) pro racer and hollywood (available on their website)
https://hutchbmx.com/store/index.php?ma … ;cPath=1_6

Cyclecraft (limited availability but can special order, per their FB page)
https://www.cyclecraftbmx.com/

Truth BMX Products (website now shows available in black and white)
https://www.truthbmxproducts.com/produc … ent-frames

*BOSS (L&S Fabrication) Looks like made to order https://www.creationbybossman.com/

*US Made

There may be others. From what I've heard steel frames are popular in Australia so there may be some brands over there.

Re: New steel bikes?

I am surprised how few there are. At the track there I saw a bunch of Standards, a few SpeedWagons, and a Cult or two. It makes it seem that there is a market.

I also looked to see if Clayborn still did them. -Nope. I always liked the front end on those.

I was really surprised that DK does not offer chromoly race bikes. The same company that once had an ad with Neil Wood stating aluminum is for cans.

hahah I remember those "dont ride a piece of ship"
unfortunately there wasnt enough demand to support that platform. (even tho they made mini and junior frames in aluminum at the time) and it eventually hurt them in the long run especially with more competition.
they became the walmart bikes you see today for intro/casual consumers and some high end shop/mail (Alum) stuff filling out the top end demands

Standard or S&M...American made.

China and Taiwan can't come close to touching what Standard produces.

Re: New steel bikes?

I edited list above, just found out about Colony has a chromo race frame they just came out with.

Out of all the choices, Standard, S&M, Laird, F-Bom, and Stout are US made.

Just for reference my Laird Frame was built with a 21.2 TT, 14.5 CS, 8.2 stand over and weighed 3 lbs 13oz. Additionally FBM will build you a Bitchin Camaro to your specs if you do a custom order with them.

Re: New steel bikes?

Weekend project to build up. Thought some of you might be interested to see what the Cult race frame looks like in Raw. Frame only, weighed in at 4.6 lb. on scale at my work.

And if anyone is wondering that wheel/tire coffee table is right rear, set 1, from pole, New Hampshire race 2001, Jeff Gordon's last championship year.

Love that raw finish! Have you stripped your black frame or is this a new project?

Re: New steel bikes?

I sold the black one to an excited buyer, its on way to him right now. When I bought it, they had just come out and only had black or painted silver. I've never had a raw finish frame before, so it was calling to me. The Cult race bars and race fork, just released and snatched those up... the quality is really good, 8.5" rise on the bars, fork has threaded top cap and integrated race (why don't they all do this seriously!). The front wheel is Cult aero and the stem is Cult salvation.

Re: New steel bikes?

They definitely don't skimp out on the swag, asked them on their online store checkout to toss in some decals, got all this including 2 complete sets of frame decals which I really appreciate as a nice touch.

Re: New steel bikes?

Finally got to see a mates Raw 450z today, same thing as usual, the bikes look so much better in person than in photos, so can appreciate the Cult would also look even better to the naked eye.

If you didn't have "race inspired" cranks on the Cult, no one would be the wiser on it being a race bike.
Is a bit of a thing i personally love seeing, looks just as in place on the street as the track

What about other frame companies?  Haro or SE or even skyways? A little heavier but they do offer racing frames:D

Re: New steel bikes?

I added Skyway (limited run of TA cromo race frames in 2017, few still available from dealers) and Hutch JDB, to post #3 above.

Far as I know with Haro, no new school 4130 race frames. Any cromo frames are retro/freestyle.

My listing is shooting for only modern, race, cromo, that is still available in production. big_smile

Re: New steel bikes?

At least one new Skyway is being put to race duty ...

That said, I'll probably be turning it into a recreational rider and picking up a more purpose-built racing frame and fork in the near future.  In the meantime, though, it's a fun conversation piece with some of the other old guys at the track.

Love that, best of old and new. Kinda like you hear about buying a classic muscle car and putting modern engine and drivetrain under the hood.

Re: New steel bikes?

Good question! Was also wondering how it compares to a modern, more race-specific frame. A very cool bike regardless!
