The SE Racing Basher trifecta

SE Racing used the Basher name on three different frames between 1980-83. The first frame was made for the 1980 model year. It was mild steel and built using the looptail Quad jig. Colors were advertised as candy red and  Bad Boy Brown, though a brown one has never surfaced in pics or in real life but two chrome ones have (Ive actually owned both chrome ones known and its definitely OG chrome).  Most were the candy red.

For the 1981-82 model years, SE had contracted Murray to make the Basher and Murray used the X20r Hi tensile 1010 frames and made Landing Gear(ish) forks. Scot and Mike were unhappy with the product and pulled the plug on the whole partnership. These were never released to the public but there are 4-5 known out there. Ive seen chrome and black. All the rest were redecaled as X20r and shipped to Pep Boys Auto to be sold.

From interview with the OM:
"The poor quality of the Landing Gear made by Murray for our "SE-Second Line" (Basher, Mountain Mauler and Mauler 24") is why I rejected 3600 bikes for Christmas 1980 deliveries... other wise, the bike would have worked and made SE competitive with Diamond Back & other imports with our MADE IN USA Bicycles.

The late deliveries and quality control problems is why I squashed the deal in 81 and Murray re-stickered the bikes "X-20" and "X-24".... We also had the "Rabbit Runner" mountain bike (26") named after my friend country music singer, Eddie Rabbit (died in 1996, R.I.P)... SE was WAY ahead of the industry in 79 - 80 with Mountain Bikes. But, when this Murray deal fell apart, I concentrated on our high line P.K.'s, Quads, OM's, Floval Flyers and the new rage of Free Style. We would and should have been the "Specialized" of Mtb's !... that was my bad."

After the Murray deal tanked, SE bought a bunch of Race Inc RA7 frames from Race Inc, Race Inc was axing the RA7 after a seven year run and was starting production on the new for 1983 RA10. This was also about the same time SE also parted ways with Race Inc and started building all their frames in house. These were all black or ball burnished and all started with RA49xxx or RA5xxxx serials.

There were two downtube decals used and Ive seen both the first and third gen frames with both styles of decal.

***ALL magazine ads, articles, and OM Quote I have here are courtesy of BMX Society. ****  All frames pictured here are MINE.

Here's all three styles:
1980 on top
82 Murray in middle
82-83 Race Inc on bottom.

Most of the 82 Murray frames had 1981 seat tube decals and all the 83 Race Inc frames had 82 serials.

All three of these are OG finish and decals.

Hey guys, go ahead and keep selling everything SE, GJS, and Nomura to Thailand. Once it's gone it's NEVER coming back to the US. There really IS more to BMX collecting than money!!

If I hear the words "RARE", "GRAIL", or "SCORE" one more time, I'm gonna f'n puke.

Love the history.

Does the one on the top step have a 5" headtube?  It looks longer than the other two.

If I understand correctly, Welded up, but not released, became a murray model.

Brian, this is great info, love this stuff on how and why things worked out.  Its interesting to see how much the companies worked together / contracted back and forth.  Thanks for putting it together.
