Best Polished Rims

I'm thinking of building some new wheels for my son's bike, and I was thinking of going with some polished rims since I like chrome rims, myself, but don't want to pay for that on his. I have seen some that almost look chrome, and I'm wondering if anyone has experience in person with polishef rims. Who has the best looking, chrome-like, polished rims? I have looked at the Rant Squad and the Stolen Rampage rims.

Re: Best Polished Rims

I am actually going to do this to a set of chromed aluminum rims I got. I am going to blast the chrome off then polish them.

Sun rims polished are always nice and bright, plenty of new school options.

Whats the bike?

The Bone Deth polished are very nice I think. Look good and brakes grab great on them too.

Go ahead and blast them then have fun polishing if the blasting creates a rough finish. Of course this all depends on what kind of media is used.  Aluminum is very soft, use caution when doing this sort of thing.

Actually polished or just machined? I have a set of chromed Rhyno Lites and they are the worst chromed rims I have ever seen. They didn't polish the rims before chroming them which causes brake stuttering. Super annoying.

I've been wondering about how well brakes would work on polished rims. A friend of mine had polished rims on his 1995 GT Performer and we never got his brakes to work. Pitbulls.
Will brakes still grab well on these newer rims even after unsing them for a few months?

My nephew had an 88 GT Vertigo, and it had polished rims instead of just, what I call, silver rims. Brakes worked pretty decent on them. That's why I was considering some for some bikes I'm putting together. Rant has some in the $25 range and Stolen has some for around $32. Chainreaction has some Blank polished rims that look nice for about $20.

I've got a few different bikes I could do something with. One is a DK Banshee. I have some Sun Rhyno Lite XL chrome rims on my DK XL. For chrome rims they aren't pricey.

We just started sending parts to a guy for vapor blasting, wherein a VERY fine media is carried in steam vapor and cleans the parts with, not only, little abrasion, but supposedly, the media actually is supposed to seal the aluminum. So far, a couple of the techs have had old Honda cases and heads done, as well as a head/carb bodies/parts from a vintage BSA, with exceptional results. The BSA head/parts, with all the finning and whatnot, cost $85 total. I'll get some pics and more info on Monday and post it up here. And, in fact, I have a set of ratty chrome 7x's I'm gonna have him do. I'll post updates as they happen.

I bought some walnut media blast today. Tomorrow I am going blast a small spot on the inside to see how it turns out before I do the whole rim. I am going to save the decals on them though.

Re: Best Polished Rims

I had a set of polished rims back in the late 90s and they sucked for brakes grabbing no matter what I did. I was hesitant to buy the Bone Deth complete wheels and almost built a custom set with chrome rims, but figured I’d try em out. They’ve been doing great. I’ve been riding them since late summer 2016 and they still stop great. I’m running Evo2 brakes front and rear, and have no issues with stopping power with these polished rims.

I will add I keep em very clean too, so that helps. I wipe em down every few rides and clean the whole bike after riding dirt.

Polished rhyno lites and zx25 are both a nice finish.  I agree - Im done with chrome rims.

OP didnt really say what price range hes looking at.  Bmxguru has $30 SE polished anodized that look nice,  double wall, pinned.

Still dont know if this is old school, new school, park, race.

I don't know what I'm going to put it on myself. Most likely, either a Haro SR 1.0, Redline Proline, or a DK Banshee. I kind of just want to try a (highly) polished rim out in case I ever have to move away from chrome on my main bike.

To me the Rant and the Stolen polished rims looked almost chrome-like...and they're cheap. I'm not concerned with weight or pinned/welded...an ounce or two isn't going to affect me. I am looking for cheap though. If I get too much up in price then I might as well just go chrome. Chainreaction had the Stolen polished rim for $16.99 the other day, but they only had 1. Now it's sold out. If they had had 2, I would've jumped on them.

I took a look at the SE rim at bmxguru, but normally anodized rims are crap for brakes which is what I'm trying to avoid. Polished anodized seems to be a contradiction so I don't know what the rim looks like.

I believe the DK Banshee I have came with Sun ZX25 rims. I'm not a fan of those at all.
