1981 JMC Racing Black Shadow

Finally got the bike I wanted when I was 14.

I've been wanting a black JMC Black Shadow with a Euro BB since they came out. Not only did I find one, but through some weird twist of fate or harmonic convergence, I had cash on me to buy it that day.
In 1981 I sold my beloved Torker to buy something longer. I had wanted a JMC since 1978. When an area shop started carrying JMC in 1980ish, I decided that a JMC would be my next bike. I went in to buy a black Black Shadow with a Euro BB. The shop was out of Shadows and had no forks. The only frame in stock was a blue long standard. Being an impatient 14-year-old, I took it with plans to buy a fork later. I had immediate buyer's remorse, but I loved the bike's ride. Soon I was planning how I would replace it with the Black Shadow F/F of my dreams. I never did, till today. Found that this was already here in the museum in OG condition. http://bmxmuseum.com/bikes/jmc/1144

Nice.  Glad you finally got this Michael.  It looks gorgeous.  You can still get JMC decals from Jim Melton on ebay.  My understanding of the "Guest" thing is that when Gary runs across a bike that he doesn't own (like on ebay) and wants to put it in the museum, he does it as "Guest", so that's probably how that went.

Re: 1981 JMC Racing Black Shadow

Yeah, looks like maybe the "guest" sent him an email or PM'd him. Not sure. Maybe it was on eBay. I'm gonna go back to the swap meet I bought it at and talk more to the guy. I need more info. I made a little scrap book. Kinda gay, but I did. I want to show him the info I have and see what he can add.

Thanks for the comments. I'm digging it.

I ordered stickers two days ago. I email with Jim Melton from time to time. He's a nice guy. I plan to buy some black pads soon, too. He's got them on eBay again.

I am the Andrew that owned the bike and toted it around for many years...  The story goes as follows:

In 1981 Bellevue Cycle Shop (Bellevue, Nebraska) was sponsoring local racers and chose to give them custom built JMC's...  The racer that got this bike was the older brother of my best friend...  His name was Jeff Gavin, and he raced relatively successfully in and around Nebraska, including Iowa, Kansas, and Missouri...  After a few years of riding the bike, you probably could tell that the Bottom Bracket and spindle got worn and was not a solid racer anymore without fixing...  Well, about that time, Jeff got out of BMX and moved onto some Motocross, so he never got it fixed and the bike never raced again...  One day, we were hanging out in his garage, and I mentioned the bike sitting in the back behind a bunch of other bikes, so Jeff asked if I wanted to buy it for $20!!!  I did, and rode it for a bunch of years, before college, marriage, and kids...  Family Garage Sale motivated the sale, and Google research found Jim Melton and the greatness that is JMC...  You have the frame, and the forks...  The bars went to another guy I think in California, they were pretty sweet, and the Neck actually went all the way to Australia...  Also sold the rims...  Many people suggested the sale of individual parts, rather than the whole bike...  I do have some various parts that were not in good shape that we could talk about...

Hope that story helps your scrapbook, Jeff was a cool guy, and before Bellevue Cycle went out of business, they were really good to the BMX scene in Nebraska...  The owner is still around, and I believe he has a bunch of cool stuff in his storage and possession...

Awesome Rebuild, can I get a big professional photo of it that I can frame for my office???

That bike is super cool.  I always liked the JMC's as a kid, too.  The gold on black is a great combo, nice job puting this old racer back together.
