1986 MARTIN APARIJO GT PFT REPLICA BUILD
I’m sure that lots can recognize this famous photo of one of the GREATS - MARTIN APARIJO!!
I have looked at this photo many times, and always thought to myself- that bike is BAD AZZ!!
1st you should know this - I AM A DAYGLO ADDICT!! That being said, I have been snagging them up for a few years now. One however, I had never had the chance to get my hands on - the DayGlo Yellow of 86. This color had been the hardest to find by far. I had/have a WTB post up and was looking for the hard to find DayGlo Yellow goodies. I did score a DG Y frame and fork off of eBay, but it is in dire need of a restore - age, abuse, neglect, rust, missing paint, and sun fade have taken a toll on it. It was a complete bike as purchased, and I sold everything not OG from it to recoup some of the expense. Here is what was left.
Apparently, in the disassembly to ship to me, they used a torch to free up some stuck pedals and burnt the crap out of the chain stays. The burns were not there in the Ebay listing. Also discolored the chrome on the cranks. Lovely!
I posted the WTB trying to find some OG bars and post.
http://bmxmuseum.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=745566
I eventually found a set of OG bars, but being the skeptic I tend to be, were they really OG? So the post stayed up in hopes to find more. Then member erichevy posted the “Martin” pic as a color reference. We both thought a replica of that bike should be done. Soon after that member chromey hooked me up with OG bars and seat post. He was thinking the same thing - maybe someday to build that bike.
I wasn’t yet committed to the build. After staring at the picture again admiring the combo of chrome, DG Y, and lavender parts, I happened to notice the “mods” in the picture. A third brake lever lower on the bars, and 3rd rear stander cut off and positioned downward. HMmm... AWESOME!! My curiosity was on the move, and i was going to build it!! Heck, I had the DG Y goods now.
Yesterday, this arrived in the mail. So here we go.
This is a Dec. of 85 Japan “baseball” stamped frame. I’m assuming that the original was a US made “FS” stamped one, but this will do until I find a FS. I wanted to do it all in survivor parts so I wouldn’t guilt myself out of riding it.
I have the better half of the parts, but still need a few. Also would appreciate any and all knowledge or guesses at what some of the questionable parts are.
These are my guesses on what I still need——
Wheels - race lace sealed with Araya hoops?
Brakes - Nippon F & R, I have a front in white
Levers - black Ody RX-3 with polished/raw levers? Looks like 2 clamping bolts from the picture by his hand, and left lever is not all black
Lever 3 - Ody drilled 2000 style in Lav?
Lavender seat will be tough to find
Grips - have no clue with the low flanges
Fork standers - appears to me to be a shadow on the side facing away from him so I’m leaning toward a gen 2 (87) style stander with the GT cutout.
Chain - Izumi?
Gyro top plate is white maybe?
Headset?
Like I said, additional input is welcome and appreciated!

What year did the A'ME/GT Anatomical grips come out? They have no flanges.... That may be what they are.

Re: 1986 MARTIN APARIJO GT PFT REPLICA BUILD
What about these grips? I remember using these at least briefly at one point, and surprisingly they're still making them!
ame-mtb-grips-firm
Cool build! Looking forward to seeing this one.
(As a complete aside, in browsing the A'me site I came across these flangeless ATV rounds that seem to be the closest thing currently made to the classic rounds that were stock on '87 GTs.)

Re: 1986 MARTIN APARIJO GT PFT REPLICA BUILD
I think that those brakes are likely MX1000s or MX900s and not Nippons. The rear one has the older-style mounting bolts. And the brake pads look wrong to me. Nippons would be fine, of course, but maybe not accurate.
I think that those hubs are likely GT race - Super-Lace comes later. The rear axle looks like it is hollow.
That is likely a full-white Gyro kit. A safe assumption, at least.
Looks like a set of chrome and a set of black sprocket bolts.
SR pedals.
(I think)

Re: 1986 MARTIN APARIJO GT PFT REPLICA BUILD
Jeff! I think you may have nailed the grips!! It makes sense too.
Wadeaminute- you may be right on the brakes. I see the earlier style bolt now. I have never owned a set of 1000’s, I’ll have to search them. And yes the hollow axle is there for sure.
Chromey lead me to the KKT SMX pedals. They are close to the SR’s. The SR are not quite that square when looking at them from the dust cap view. Also it appears that there is a line accross Martin’s dust cap, like these.
Some of the goods so far

Re: 1986 MARTIN APARIJO GT PFT REPLICA BUILD
Here is what came off the DG Y as I was tearing it down.
Stem and post were stuck. Chrome peel anyone? Lol
Flipped the bike upside down and put post in vice then used frame for leverage. Put a straight post in the stem and muscled it out.
Headset was a Tange
The fork may be too ruff for this build... should I have it powdered?? The big ?

Those grips were on the 88’s for a debut I think, and they are FAT, I have a few sets. I think his are thinner than those.
I HONE out the seat post tubes now on most of my survivor stuff. It makes a huge difference when sliding in the next post, especially when it is a rare color or new powder. The pile of rust dust that comes out is ridiculous.

Re: 1986 MARTIN APARIJO GT PFT REPLICA BUILD
These are more pictures from the same magazine i got the nice color scan off of. Unfortunately, my scanner is not cooperating at the moment so this is the best I can do. This should definitely help with parts selection tho. If you are ever interested in tracking down the magazine, it's Jan 1987 BMX Plus.
By the way, the lavender Odyssey lever on his bars... there happens to be one on eBay right now. Comes with the lavender brake caliper tho. Maybe the seller would separate for you. Also... looking thru a magnifying glass at the full page color spread in my magazine shows a square adjuster on the rear brake too, so I'd guess he's running matching Odyssey brakes front and rear.

So Ody FS2000 brakes!?! So cool he's riding an 86 model with a slew of 87 parts. That color combo is so bad a$$.
If you dare me, I'll jump pretty much anything

How did he ever do any tricks using Odyssey 2000 brakes? Those were the worst brakes I ever tried, and I tried almost everything out there in 88 on up.

Pretty sure Martins frame was a late 86, 4 hole rear dropout. But if I had the frame you’ve got I’d be fine with using it I’d also redo the paint on the forks...
