The chainwheel proved to be a lot tougher however. I HAD to have this nos Sugino Mighty 45t in ano black. I paid dearly, and it cost me more than the cranks did. The cranks were a bit of an impulse buy; I loved the look, they were clean, and they were cheap. I knew going in the 144bcd was going to be odd, but I thought the look would be worth it. The arms are straight, and I'm a little worried about clearing the frame with the 130mm spindle the conversion bb kits come with. It's gonna be tight.

That looks perfect.

And, if you need to bust out a hammer and dent the drive side chainstay so you have enough clearance to run those, so be it.

That's good to know, I think they are gonna look the bomb.

I've been resisting the urge to mock it up until I have everything. The bars and pedals are the only real question marks at this point.

Re: Gonna build an old Mongoose

Got some bars! Late 80s Schwinn/Diamond Back CW style pro bars. Also sniped a DC 890 and tech 3 lever.

It's going together this weekend, I'll post some pics.....

Really nice seat, I think the handlebars are cool, just not on the mongoose. Good luck, looking forward to seeing it completed.

Re: Gonna build an old Mongoose

The cranks are in, the chain is on, and the brake is mounted:

BUT.......

The Rampar fork's threads don't go down far enough to thread the hs on. So I either have to start looking for a new fork, or find a lbs who will re-thread it. It just needs about 1/3 of an inch. I was really hoping to use this fork....

A good LBS will have the Park tool that you can cut threads with. Since that fork is just regular steel (not chromed) it's relatively easy. I had to cut threads once on a vintage Schwinn fork, and the Park Tool is the bomb. Go for it!

Re: Gonna build an old Mongoose

Your story is a lot like mine. I rode the awful bike in my profile pic until I scored a used nickle Mongoose race steed for $75 in '81 or so. I keep thinking I'll do some sort of tribute build one day as well.

I'm in! Looking great so far!

Re: Gonna build an old Mongoose

Got a local lbs to re-thread the fork (took a few calls before I could find somebody who would do it), but it was still 1/2" too tall. I took it to my regular lbs to get it cut, but they said they couldn't cut it down further without compromising the integrity of it, so we put a spacer on it. It looks a bit weird up close,  but it will work for now. I think a new fork will be in this bike's future at some point....

I'm a seatpost, brake cable, and set of tires away from riding it. The comp lll knockoffs were on the Tuffs when I got them. They are dry rotted, and the front won't hold air. Gonna get some big 2.125 comp ll style knobbies.

I think I'm gonna get some Sunlite MX's. I Like the all black look with no writing/logos.

Re: Gonna build an old Mongoose

...and finished.

Still have a couple of tiny things to do, but pretty much done. Rides smooth, but I've only taken it around the block since it's been raining. I'll take some better pics when the weather isn't miserable...
