Cutting the CORD ..... please HELP

Help!!!
I don't know what the "beep" I'm doing here  hmm  lol

Our current set-up:

Sharp LC-C3234U
Sony BRP-3500S
Digital Antenna ( gets 40ish channels )

This set-up was fine for finally cutting the cord, but we can do better.
Internet streaming is stable and hardly ever buffers.
BRP player freezes on occasion and won't do anything including powering off.
Have to go to the back and unplug the cord ...WTF??

That said we are returning that Sony hunk of crap and getting something else.

On to some "wants" then:

Wanting to replicate what Cable One was giving us, but do not want monthly fees.
We do want a programmable DVR with internal storage.
Would be nice to have the BRP built into said unit, but not mandatory.
My old Harmon Kardon receiver is an analog unit, and not playing nicely with the tv.
It would be rad to find a BRP with analog audio outputs, so the tv can be bypassed.

Concerns:

How will we know when something is scheduled to air?
Is there some sort of playlist we can access??

We don't watch that much TV, nor do we need absolute HD everything.
Any and all info and/or advise would be rad, thanks!!

Re: Cutting the CORD ..... please HELP

DVR is a crutch for people who still think they need to have recorded shows/movies beforehand.

What do I have in my living room currently?  An older gaming laptop.  It's hooked to the 55" 4k tv via HDMI coord, and the audio is set to use HDMI as default out.  I have my speakers plugged into the TV, and the audio goes seamlessly into them.

The key really isn't having fancier hardware or more of it.  The key is knowing WHERE to stream from.  And worse case, use firefox w/ VideoDownloadHelper, and just save all the files you want to "stream"--that way you never have to worry about buffering or dropped wifi signal.  90% of the time, I'm using Netflix.  But that other 10% of the time, I'm using one of about a half dozen different sites to stream whatever shows or impossible-to-find movies. (eg. recently, I wanted to watch "The Right Stuff" and you'd be amazed how impossible it is to find a 35 year old movie).

Plus, most any laptop will have a Blu-Ray player built in (or you can get a USB one for piss cheap that plugs into said PC.  Just make sure you have something that can handle multiple-screen output, and something sufficient to handle your TV resolution.

p.s.
I am using 2.1 Stereo currently, but I could easily go 7.1 or 8.1...I'm just too lazy to mount all the speakers & fish the wires as appropriate.  I don't recommend wireless speakers.

No monthly fee, just buy the android box, learn how to download the add ons you want and the skies the limit.Cable cancelled and netflix don't even come close.just so you know,I watched that joke of a fight mayweather vs mcgregor fight for free.

PM coming your way.

Re: Cutting the CORD ..... please HELP

You're right.  Netflix selection isn't all that it's cracked up to be...and it's gotten much worse than previous.  That said, I subscribe out of principle.  I have no desire to support in-house offerings like HBO GO, CBS on demand, etc.  I should be able to get all the shows/movies I want for a flat rate, and from 1 place.  So I support netflix and--by extension--all the companies that wisely have chosen to do business with them.  Everything else?  The content owner isn't getting paid a dime when I watch.  That's their own fault for not getting on board.

Re: Cutting the CORD ..... please HELP

Thanks for all the ideas and such.

I kinda forgot to add the need for simplicity.
The laptop route isn't going to work as my 4 year old can't navigate that.

As of now he can navigate the BRP and get to Netflix and pick a show.

My kids are always playing with Legos and such (as we speak).

Computers and electronics are the present and future, so as to be
well rounded I would like them to be able to navigate electronics as well   wink

Yep, Sony BluRay is getting sent back as it sucks and doesn't function properly.

Wife came home with a $45 Walmart Roku stick last night.
We had good luck with it.

Although we are still needing to get away from Netflix/Hulu subscriptions.

Ultimately we might go the Android box route, but needed a band-aid for the time
being while we figure it out.

Thanks to all of you for the ideas!

Again???

Didn't they fight a few years back?

I used to watch UFC all the time, but I'm just too busy now.
When I do have time to watch tv it's with the Mrs for a hour or two before bed.
She doesn't dig fighting, so UFC is out.

Re: Cutting the CORD ..... please HELP

There are free solutions out there.  I"m not ready to toss in the towel on paying for anything...yet.  But I won't bend over backwards to get something legally that is intentionally labyrinthine and or expensive to get.

P.s.

If you're not going to use a laptop, at least set up a home server you can put your media files on.  Most of my stuff is on a WD 4TB passport that I plug into my laptop directly...but if a laptop is out--at least get a server you can stream/play files from on another device.  Like I said, I've found it sometimesi easier to just download a file instead of streaming it--then watch it later.

bisping never fought gsp before now, afaik.  bisping started in lt heavyweight and moved to middleweight.  GSP was always welterweight until his return.

Cord cutters -

Is there a way to see discovery channel and history channel? The only way I can find shows on those networks is with torrents, which I'm not a big fan of.

Yup,I go into the networks section of the android box and click onto whatever network I want to see, once it opens up,it displays all the shows that network provides.
