Has the collector BMX market slowed down?

Curious if other buyers and sellers are getting the sense the market has slowed down. I feel like it's tapered off from a high in the mid-late 2000's but this is only one persons POV.

Curious what other folks think about the state of the market right now.

Re: Has the collector BMX market slowed down?

Absolutely it has.

I think with prices having gone to the outrageous end of the stupidity scale, many of us aren't into it anymore.

Yup, and my DMC is all I needed to stop looking for an old school frame to feel right.  Love it.

Definitely agree with this. The prices have just gotten ridiculous especially for a very small collectable market. Not to mention that when it really started to take off from around 2003 the majority of the guys buying this stuff were in their early 30s and trying to relive a little of their youth. Fast forward 14yrs later and most of them have built the bike they had or wanted as a kid and have moved on. If they had kids then their kids are probably in college now etc. Other priorities come up. The only ones who are still in this are the ones who were never in it for the hobby/collectability aspect of it in the first place.

Re: Has the collector BMX market slowed down?

Not to mention the amount of retro frames and parts being produced now. Why ride a 30+ year old bike after you've got a ton of $$ into it when u can buy a brand new one for less and not worry about breaking or ruining anything.

Well I guess I'm the rarity now! Just shy of 50 and got back into BMX after 35+ yr hiatus. Only building pre-84 bikes w/correct timeframe parts. Don't mind Re-Chroming or Re-anodizing stuff. Even Powdering instead of painting. But Repro OS Frm/Frks-Not doin. Besides-not into it for the $$$, just want what I never could have as a Kid. Paid high for some components and lucked out as much for others. The way I look at it if I have multiples of something add what paid for ALL and divide that amount by how many have. Don't get bent on how over spent for that ONE piece or bike.

That's why I stopped listening to Classical a while back. It's not like it used to be.

Re: Has the collector BMX market slowed down?

I think what Justlive said is true.  A lot of us are getting older, but the hobby is still a draw....the guys now that are buying and building in their mid thirties are just into different era bikes mid nineties and up.

I'm too old for what????

Re: Has the collector BMX market slowed down?

This question gets asked every year.. and IMO the answer is always NO. Not as along as this current generation is alive.

Check out this thread from 2011:

People have been saying this for years, yet just yesterday I had to fight tooth and nail against 30 other bidders just to buy a GT sprocket!
