A story about me, a midschool bike, theft, police, drugs.

A little story. On December 9th I noticed a bike on an online ad. Anyway this was a bike that I've been wanting for quite some time however it was in Ontario...3000 miles away. I contacted the seller to see if he'd box it up and ship it out for the cost plus some additional compensation. We went back and forth for a few days with some questions and answers. He finally agreed to send it to me although there was a lot of interested parties closer to him. My "offer" was the best! Money going his way. He asked for my number so he could call me to chat. Number comes up as "private caller". Oops. He doesn't have paypal. Red flag. Against my better judgement I sent an etransfer but he sounded ok on the phone. All good right? Later that night we were discussing the bike on the Canadian bmx Facebook page and apparently another member had also paid for the bike. Red flag. Emailing back and forth all night during my Christmas party and I have his word the bike is mine and the other guy would be refunded. All good? I'm starting to get some anxiety so I asked if he really had the Bike or if I'm getting snowed here. He sent me a pic of his 8 year old son with a bloodied up face standing beside the bike after a spill and thus the reason for selling. I'm not overly confident at this point and went against my better judgment on so many levels. I had a verbal that it would be shipped out shortly after Christmas.

Out of courtesy for family time over the holidays I waited until Boxing Day to set up the shipping. I had no number to call him. Oops. I could respond via email through the sale forum the only thing is that it generates bogus email addresses for personal security purposes. I contacted him via our previous string of emails. No answer. Emails every 3 days. Now answer.

Fast forward to January 30.  Pretty sure my money is gone. I contacted my bank and they said my only recourse was to go to the police. All I have is a jumbled email address, know his name is Chris, that he has a couple kids and that he lives in Thunder Bay Ontario. F**K. Time to use that little bit of info and start digging. I posted an ad back to the forum with a photo of the bike back to his local area asking for info. What do you know??? I got a few responses.

The first coming from a guy named "Mile" hmmmm. The message read more or less "hey I bought the bike in person and paid what it's actually worth. You assholes are ruining everything with your low ball offers." Feeling less confident now. Chatting about everything on the Facebook page Dan (OG'89) says there's a guy named Mile from Hamilton in to bikes just like this one. Happens to be shiznitme on the museum. Double F**K. I got a friend to message him with my number so he could give me a call. What do you know??? My phone rings. It's Mile. After a lengthy chat I know he didn't sewer my and I learned a lot about some drama here on the Hoffman thread and another member making bogus online accounts in his name and using it to sewer him. Great. I'm pretty sure the bike didn't get scooped but I still don't have a bike or any more information.

Then I get another response to my ad. A lady recognized the bike and said that photo had been all over Facebook and other sale forums on various ads and the seller named "Kevin" is a known local scammer. Triple F**K. Now this bike is tied to Kevin and Chris. But...she did give me an address and a screen shot if as ad with the same photo I had. A reverse lookup gave me a name to that address which I was able to connect to a phone number. Dialed it up. Old rough lady answers. I asked for Chris having no idea where Rhian would go. "He's not here right now, can I leave a message for him?" I explained that he stole money from me and this I wanted to attempt to sort this out in person before involving the police.

I got home from work and sat down for dinner and my phone rang. "Kurt, this is Chris. I need to apologize. My wife left me after Christmas and so on and so forth and had a relapse and  now I'm trying to get clean." I clearly know where my money went. He said he still had the bike, sent me a pic with that day's newspaper and the bike. He wanted to make it right but didn't know how because he was broke. I told him to figure it out. He went on to pour his heart out to me and we had a long chat about divorce and children and I offered my personal experience and tried to give some positive advice etc.

It's now February 3rd. Every week or so I got a picture of the bike with the newspaper. The guy was stressed out which I felt bad for but he took my money. He had no money so he owed me a bike and didn't know how to pack and ship one. More weeks of this passes and I final contacted a bike shop out there to see if they'd pack it up and box it if he could deliver there. They said no  problem but I knew that would be the easy part.

I got more excuces for a couple weeks and even got asked if I could send him $20 so he could get smokes. No. Just bike please. Well another 2 weeks pass and I get a photo from the shop.

Now it was just logistics of getting to me. The bike shop laughed and asked why I was willing wanting to spend money having an old bike shipped. Sentimental value I said. Well today after 150 days I got a call from Greyhound that my package had arrived.

Still some clean up to do but the closure feels good smile

Feel good story of the day, but I must say that your first mistake was using Boxing Day as a temporal landmark!

We don't need them to be able to read long amount of text.

I couldn't handle the black odyssey bars so I took the jackhammers with me and assembled it in the parking lot of the bus depot lol

It would be worth it just for that stem.

Wasn't there another story on here about a guy scamming people and using the excuse his wife had divorced him or something?

Heres my profound, life changing statement.
Lifes a bitch..PASS ME A BEER.

They're reacting and that's wonderful. It's better than them sitting there doing nothing. I say make them react - do whatever's in your power to move the audience, and if that's where it is, and there where it is with America, sex and violence, then I say project it.

Crazy story Kurt, good on you for getting it sorted out.

Question regarding the bus depot.  You can use bus service for delivery or am I just confused?

I have heard of airplanes delivery large items and you pickup at airport but not buses...always looking for better options to ship stuff. smile
