Re: Vintage mountain bikes.Whos gottem??
Alright folks, let me lay this out for you. I have lived in the neighborhood I am in for about 5 years. In that time my kids have made friends in our area and I have worked on, adjusted, aired up tires, ect. On many of their buddies bikes. Because of this and my frequent riding around my neighborhood, I am the known bicycle guy. One day a few weeks ago I was riding past a neighbors house and stopped to talk to the father of one of my sons buddies. He told me about his recent purchase of 2 Beach Cruiser style bikes he bought for the wife and him. He then asked if I wanted his old Mountain Bike from when he was in college? I (without even knowing what it was) said sure, and assured him if I couldn’t use it I would get it to someone who would. Well here it is! There are no bars or stem but it’s a Klein! I got it in pieces and just set it back together.
Thanks,

I still have my water bottle cage that was on my first mountain bike back when I was 15. Here is the 1995 Team Marin:

Re: Vintage mountain bikes.Whos gottem??
a 1987 Mongoose Hilltopper with a nice mix of parts - my wife rode it for about a year, and I gave it to a neighbor.
My son and I did this over this winter - a mid-80's Girvin Offroad Climber, all original parts, also complete with the elastomer suspension stem:
Unfortunately the rear hub on this is a Suntour XCD, where it is this goofy not-quite-freewheel / not-quite-cassette design. We broke the rear axle and snapped the engagement tab off the gear cluster assembly, so now I need to get a new 700c rear wheel, spaced for an MTB.
I'm also the original owner of a 1986 Trek Antelope 800 - only original parts on that are the seat, stem, and bars. Mix of Deore XT and Suntour parts on it.
Labor creates all wealth.

Re: Vintage mountain bikes.Whos gottem??
So, just saw this, as my score last night was an 82 Diamondback Ridge Runner all OG minus rubber.
I didn't realize others collected old MTB as well.
For those who have the earliest DB's, what kind of tires did they come with originally? Anyone know?

Re: Vintage mountain bikes.Whos gottem??
My daily rider around town is a 1997 Specialized Rockhopper FS, in 7000 series Aluminum. I've stripped all the gears off it (currently running 32-16) and it has gone from sprung (originally came to me -- used -- with a Rock Shox Indy) to rigid, to sprung (Rock Shox Judy with bigger travel) back to rigid (Surly crmo fork.) I've got a front disc right now because the Surly fork came ready to mount, and I wanted to try it out. Still running the good old, reliable XTR v in the rear, and replaced the standard bars with some Slam cruiser bars.
There was a known problem with Specialized's blue / purple paint in '97, it tended to fade badly and flake off. So I found the frame dirt cheap -- twice! (first and only bike stolen was this same bike, which I loved so much as an urban warrior I went back and found the same frame again.) I've removed all the paint, and she's now wearing Dirt Bros decals. Pics soon. Let's see if I can find some.
