I love the GJS Bigtube. I had some time today and wanted to share this with the museum. This frame "resurfaced" in Germany. It belonged to a fellow who as a boy travelled with his family to California in the 80's and purchased this frame from a bicycle store in LA the name I am not certain of and need help with (Everything Bicycles?). It was only a frame. He travelled to the GJS factory and purchased the fork separately. He wowed the crowd when he performed in Germany as part of a freestyle trick team. So the stories of Bigtubes being used for freestyle are correct. What is interesting about this frame is that it bears the serial number B001.

I suspect that this is the earliest GJS Bigtube unless there was an unserialed prototype. Which could be. If not, then it is possible that this is the frame that Jeff Utterback rode in '83 at the ESPN event at the LA Equestrian Center in his last pro race before retiring and had showed at Interbike in '83 where it was dubbed the "Muffler Bike" because of it's oversized tubing. Interbike is where many dealers would have had a glimpse at it and ordered it for their shops for '84. It was only sold as a frame and fork and many went a very long time unsold because of it's crazy shape. It rides awesome though and is very responsive - a real testament to GJS innovative racing design.  It seems to have been a good freestyle bike as well as you can see from the old pic.

This is the "Black Swan" of GJS coinciding with BMX's decline as we witnessed the rise of Nintendo. I am very honored to share it with you all and apologize to the purists who may wish it was built a bit differently. I did the best I could with the shiny parts I had at the time bought from members of the museum. Thanks you guys! You know who you are. lol  Thanks to those who shipped to Canada. Any comments about GJS or Jeff Utterback or this bicycle is welcomed and appreciated.https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/204475/img_1071589e4b1f3a.jpg

This is what it looks now after debuting at the Vancity BMX Show 2016 as hosted by Olaf from Vancity. Thanks for looking.

Re: GJS Bigtube #001 Resurfaces!

That bike is phat! Only one I ever saw in person was at our LBS (A-1 Bikes) when I was a youngster, white w/ chrome parts. We thought it was ugly back then, and I remember it sat on the sales floor for a long time. We had no taste in cool as kids. Fanny packs, neon colors (that didnt match), a zillion extra tubes for standing on, and laughing at GJS Big Tubes. Now, they are grail material!

Re: GJS Bigtube #001 Resurfaces!

The guy who imported the frame to Germany is Michael Buczek. He even got two Big Tubes back in the day. I know, cause I used to own one of those two.

Re: GJS Bigtube #001 Resurfaces!

I remember when a local dude showed up at the track on a Sunday with a brand new Big Tube back in the day. We all ooogled it for a while. I wish I could remember who had it since it is probably still here somewhere.

Re: GJS Bigtube #001 Resurfaces!

Indeed Michael Buczek is the man! He packaged it well and it arrived at my doorstep from Europe safe. He even sent along the photo of himself riding the ramp at the freestyle show and a nos GJS decal. I wrote him a letter to thank him for it and I asked him a few questions further about the bike. It was a "Demo" frame when he bought it. Which leads me to believe that the frame has more history behind it. I suspect there are people on the museum who may know. roll

Thing is, I had one of his Big Tubes since probably ’91 or so, thinking it was the only one he had. I know that he bought both frames raw, hence the hideous lime green that he painted the frame first when I saw it in ’84 / ’85. My frame had been gone through many colors when it fell in my hands. It was dark metallic green when I got it. I had powdered it black put some repop decals on but sold it last year. Around two years ago I saw this ”demo” / prototype frame on eBay and found out it was Michael selling this one. Dude had two of them. But he never told me. To me it seems like this prototype frame was barely ridden, since he had another one to use. I remember a freestyle contest where he used the Big Tube for ramps and rode flatland on a Torker freestyler. He was a pretty good rider and skater, later running a skate shop in the early 90s in his home town Duisburg. My two cents.
