I was a big RAD, Martin Aparijo, and GT fan as a kid. Will this new Pro Performer work for an amateur rider who wants to do some free style tricks, cruise, and some light dirt track action?  Are 26 inch wheels good for an all around amateur bike?

try this one

Gary Turner LEGEND 22" frame set

takes 22" wheels and tires. biger than a 20" but smaller more maneuverable than a 24" BMx

Gary Turner (GT Bicycles) Billy, we are still working out the bugs! This one has a 22" TT, 22" wheels, looking at about $349 for F/F

Re: New GT performer 26 for 2017.. looks good

Im around your size and the 24 Quad I bought feels like riding a 80s BMX.  Its definitely a stand only BMX.  The 26 Perfomer is a nice ride.  Not sure what tricks your trying to pull off.  The 26 feels so much nicer to ride and all around more comfortable.   Top Tube length is important.   If you havent ridden in years, just get a 26 cruiser.  You could pull off the basic 80s freestyle stuff on a 26.  If looking for park or ramp you need a 20 or 22 with long TT.  I like the 26 so much I'm looking to buy another and maybe a 29 in spring.  You will see age and lack of bike time have taken a toll.  I love the 26 Perfomer.   Good luck.

Re: New GT performer 26 for 2017.. looks good

I enjoy the 26" Performer as well. Very easy to ride, fast, and comfortable. I have pegs on the front and back and added front brakes to increase the freestyle functionality of the bike. So far, I can catch some nice air on the dirt track, a few tricks on the rear pegs and a couple of hops on the front pegs. The part that I find hard with this bike is 180 Bunny hops and sit down wheelies on flatland. Not sure if it is the geometry of the frame or just technique. As for the retro look of the bike for a former GT Performer owner, that was the main reason for the purchase, along with the cranks.

I'll chime in, have one also.  Aside from the QC issues I had in the beginning I love mine.  I'm 6' and a heavyweight at around 275lbs. The Bike rides awesome.  I also have a fat ripper I compare it to.  The GT cheaper and lighter.  All things aside, these bikes are worth more in parts, especially the cranks.  Get one you will love it

Re: New GT performer 26 for 2017.. looks good

Thanks.  In the late 80s, I got a blue Performer for Christmas so I am going to repeat it in 2016.  The 30th anniversary of RAD was this year and the director was from Arkansas so they had a get together in Little Rock and Martin Aparijo and actor Bill Allen came.  It was good meeting them and watching Martin reenact some scenes.  He is still awesome on a bike.

That would be the coolest thing ever to get a blue Performer 26 for this Christmas.  Start looking now and make sure you can source one.

Why does the sticker state "Performer" instead of "Pro Performer"?

Good question, the original release article calls it the 2017 GT Performer Pro 26.

The GT website calls it the 2017 GT Pro Performer 26 based on 1986 Performer Design.

Re: New GT performer 26 for 2017.. looks good

Unfortunately it seems that the 2017 GT Performer 26" is for the US-market only sad
Now I've found a dealer in UK getting some of them in january 2017 (limited to 25 for whole Europe - crazy).
Placed a pre-order for a white one, and now I'm waiting for january 2017 to get it shipped to Germany (sad, not for christmas) big_smile

I also have a chrome 26" Performer out of 2012 (or 2013?).
For this, I can confirm the very cool handling and position for cruising around.
Have done just a few amendmends like swapping the handlebar to an original Performer bar, swapping the pedals to KHE's (nylon), mounting a front brake and a layback seatpost...

But, in fact I was a little bit disappointed regarding the quality of the old model.
This goes for some welds, the quality of the chrome and some tubes (particularly the seat stays building the platform around the seat tube).
Platform seems to be a little bit crooked compared to the vertical seat tube.
Can anybody confirm this?
Frame is just hi-ten and not Cr-Mo.

Against this background I ask myself the question about the quality of the 2017 model...!?
Also made in China?
Maybe someone can compare the new and the old model relating to possible quality differences.
Is the frame of the new model straight, without any variations / deformed geometry?

I ended up making one good GT Performer out of 2 I got.  Spent all of last night swapping parts from one 2017 to make another decent example of this thing.  The wheels are near perfect of my replacement bike, no scratches and they run true.  Swapped bars off original as they were perfect.  The replacement bike bars were really bad looking...something went wrong with the clear coat.  The front forks are now perfectly aligned with the front wheel drop outs.  Welds are better on the new one..no holes in the welds.  I'm happier now but still wish they had somebody that knew how to put decals on straight.  As stated before this bike is so inferior in build quality to my SE Fat Ripper....even thought they are both from china.

Re: New GT performer 26 for 2017.. looks good

Thanks Freestyle freak - I'm desperately disappointed that GT treats particularly his vintage line so badly sad
Seems, that they have enormous tolerances in production and even no end-control!
My only hope is to get a model with a lot of tolerances, wherein all tolerances will cancel each other to get a perfect matching bicycle tongue

I ordered a blue GT Pro Performer the other day. The bike shop owner said his GT rep said GT is all out of the white ones and the blue ones will not be available until December 20th.

Re: New GT performer 26 for 2017.. looks good

It caught my eye when I was searching for a 24 incher recently however the original 20 inch version was one of my two real freestyle bikes as a kid I found the lack of front and rear pegs, surfing platform, gyro, the 26 wheels, etc a turn off.

Now if they did a modern remake that included all the great details modernized, and in 24 inch I would have a hard time resisting.

That being said, I think its a great bike regardless and am happy to see more options for everyone to ride.

Knight bike co did a version of the 24 inch and it was freaking AWESOME. I sold mine and it's actually back up for sale here in the for sale section for too much if you ask me

Now why would somebody want to sell this bike so soon? Great job on finding a Gt Performer in white. Enjoy!

The guy picked up a 26" Hutch frame and was going to build that up instead.

How do you install a Gyro in one of these? The headset doesn't look like the normal press in cup style.

frame needs to have  screw in Gyro tabs on the sides of frame. if it dos not than have a bike shop add them or do it your self. like my Haro 26"  bike is done.

I added front brakes to mine to increase the "fun" factor, but I would love to have a gyro installed. If you decide to convert it, please post photos and details.
