Tough... I dont know for sure if it was the first I was "aware" of but the first news that affected me (being a 10 year old kid) was John Lennon's death.

Re: "What's The First Big News Story You Were Aware Of As A Kid?"

I have memories of a few big stories, the Challenger, Freddy Mercury's death, and I'm sure a few more.

But the first big story that I remember dominating the news, for an extended period of time, was the Jeffrey Dahmer case.   Happening right in my home town, it was local, and national news.   It was a major topic of conversation around here, for quite a while.

I heard the term "skyscraper" on the news when I was real little. Couldn't understand why or how the sky needed scraping. I must have been six or seven. It's funny how that sticks with you after all those years. Getting old SUCKS sad

I remember when Jimmy Carter won the election in 1976.  I was 7.  Also remember most of the ones named in this topic.

MTVs first video, the volcano, space shuttles first launch, Ronnie getting shot, but my most memorable moment happened in May of 87...when a rocket fuel plant called Pepcon exploded...that was one hell of a blast!!

I've seen video of the plant explosion, it was crazy! The shockwave ripping across the desert is something I'll never forget.

This is a weird one but the earliest news memory I have is tupac walking in court. I can even remember my mom commenting "what a thug.."

Re: "What's The First Big News Story You Were Aware Of As A Kid?"

Not to get off subject with sports but what about the USA beating Russia in hockey in the 1980 Olympics.

Carter giving back the Panama Canal.  I remember my grandpa complaining about that for months.

Freddy Prince committed suicide.

John DeLorean getting setup.

I agree Elvis was very big news.

Regan getting shot was big news that someone mentioned.

But Gerald Ford had an attempt on his life also by former Charles Manson Cult member Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme.

Jim Jones "Jonestown" mass suicides.

First moon landing.  It was summer break and I had the Measles.  I had to stay inside and away from my friends, so I was stuck in front in front of the TV until I cleared up.

Re: "What's The First Big News Story You Were Aware Of As A Kid?"

The first news story I remember, and also something I experienced live was the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989 - I had just turned 5 twelve days earlier.

A close second is the news that the Oakland A's swept the SF Giants in that World Series... I'm pretty sure I cried when my Giants couldn't manage to win one friggen game (kind of like their recent stretch of games against the Padres hmm)
