1989 Haro Sport Ron Wilkerson Tribute

I decided to transform one of my 1989 Haro Masters into a look-alike prototype Sport like EbenK's. If you don't know, there were only 6 of these made by Kastan for Haro back in 89. One red frameset, one black and four chrome. The frames were distributed like this; red to Ron W, black to Mat H, chrome to Brian Blyther, Lee Reynolds, Eddie Roman and Eben Krackau. These frames are built out of all .065 chromoly tubing and built to the same specs of the 88 Haro Sport frames. Due to the tubing thickness these frames weigh somewhere in the 8-8.5lb range. Eben states that his might be the only one left in existence.

Ron Wilkerson was one of my favorite riders as a kid so this is why I am choosing a tribute build to him. I am building his red version of the prototype series. I have acquired about 95% of the parts so far. I also recreated many of the decals that Ron put on this bike. The only decal that I will not apply is the huge Jimmy'z one that covers from the headtube to the seat tube. I just think this one is too gaudy.

I am having museum member Chaby to do the frame's altering, chroming of the rear triangle, and then red powder on the frame. He is also powdering the Woody bars white, ACS Slant Stem white, and ACS Tangent levers bases to black. He's taking the top tube off a 1990 Invert and marrying it to my 1989 Master. I do not plan to change the geometry of the Master to match the Sport's. That would be too costly.

For parts, I have an ACS Pro Rotor, ACS RL Edge wheels with a Suntour coaster hub with an ACS Freecoater, red Kashimax RS seat, Haro multisurface tires (also have an orphan RL Edge tire), Haro Team sprocket, and ACS Boa brakes.

I still need to acquire gold DX pedals or VP-500 pedals, 24tpi Haro Fusion pegs, and to try to determine the seat clamp used. I can't make out what Ron which pedals or seat clamp Ron used in the photos.

Here are some of the decals that I made for the bike. The bumper sticker sized on will go on the spokes of the rear wheel.

I will update with more photos as the frame gets altered and powdered.

Thanks for the look and stop back soon!

My guess is gold DX's. The traction pegs on the big photo above look more like DXs than VPs.

Also I would bet the opc is off one of Ron's 88 Sports, whatever was OEM. Didn't Haro use black ano opc's for awhile?

Re: 1989 Haro Sport Ron Wilkerson Tribute

Cool build, any plan for the master's old twin top tubes? I'd be interested in them for a similar project if want to part with them.

I do have plans for something in the bike room. I also am keeping the remnants of the Invert for a bike stand.  Sorry buddy

The rear RL Edge hoop is now laced with the Suntour coaster with a freecoaster.

That giant jimmys decal,  did he just wrap the opening on the frame with it? If so,  did he leave a clear backer on the decal then?  If not,  i would think in a few weeks worth of riding it would have all kinds of dirt and debris stuck to the inside of the decal?

Re: 1989 Haro Sport Ron Wilkerson Tribute

Awesome idea! I've wanted to build a Wilkerson tribute bike from the 87-88 era. Props I can't wait to see the build come to life!

Re: 1989 Haro Sport Ron Wilkerson Tribute

Very cool,I've thought about that specific bike before.
Do the huge decal but apply it to thin plastic sheeting that you can zip tie on and off.
Nice tribute bike

Would like lots of bikes but the SE Hauler is one that has a lot of sentimental value to me. Anyone got one?

Re: 1989 Haro Sport Ron Wilkerson Tribute

Chaby cut out the top tube on the Invert and reverse stripped the chrome off.
