Let's talk restoring white mag wheels

As the title says would like to know who has had success turning old white mags that have yellowed back to white. I have tried bleach, bleach and sun, volume 40 hair product, hours of scrubbing. What will make these wheels white?? I thought about soda blasting but wanted to hear feedback before I drop them off and find out that it wasn't the answer.

Don't let the pictures fool you they're yellow and it's driving me nuts!

Re: Let's talk restoring white mag wheels

Thinking about doing the same thing to a set of white Peregrine masters. I feel ya... I'm wanting white as they can get. Would love to hear the feedback on this.

Painting them definitely not going to happen. LoL

I was hoping to get some responses from people who have had success whitening their wheels but I guess that's out of the question

There might be a thread or 2 on this topic.

There's several. But haven't found anything about soda blasting. I did find one thread where a guy bead blasted them but we're still yellow when he was done.
Last time I used the volume 40 hair peroxide I did it with uv lights and it did nothing. Today is decently sunny here in NJ going to try it again. If I get the same results I'll start experimenting with dye lol

Re: Let's talk restoring white mag wheels

It's the ultraviolet rays that do the trick.  Not enough UV outside this time of year.

I believe that summer warmth also facilitates the process by speeding up the reaction.

Re: Let's talk restoring white mag wheels

I use the mr clean sponge and sos pad for brake rub. Dishwasher, Vaseline the outer hub metal area. Place in bleach/water for 1/2 day. Rinse off and rub down with a plastizer I guess it's like a plastic hardener I was pretty happy with the outcome...http://uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/209555/image56b12de265.jpg

Re: Let's talk restoring white mag wheels

Well I tried the volume 40 hair peroxide stuff and sunlight. Let them sit in direct light all day moved them around and spun them throughout day and they're noticeably whiter. Going to do the opposite sides tomorrow. It's hard to get a picture of the change but it's definitely white compared to the yellow on the other sides.

Re: Let's talk restoring white mag wheels

the peroxide/sun worked for me many times with many different types of plastic. sometimes id leave it days in the sun. maybe it is the lack of uv rays like previously stated. its pretty sunny here in miami most of the time

Re: Let's talk restoring white mag wheels

I'll keep an eye on this as well, got a handful of mags I need to whiten. Planned on doing peroxide but just purchased a sand blast cabinet for some other things so I may try glass beads on the wheels, I heard that works well too..

I use Polident denture cleaner for smokers to whiten stained porcelain pocket watch dials, don't know what it does to plastic.

Re: Let's talk restoring white mag wheels

Mix up some retr0brite gel, cover the wheels in it, put in sun for a couple of days. If they aren't white after that, then there's something wrong with them. I have done a couple dozen sets, several worse than these and they always come out super white.

Re: Let's talk restoring white mag wheels

Hi guys!
here's what i do usually with white mags.
remove bearing and axles and clean the bearing races
treat hubs and races with vaseline
then soak the mags in bleach and water solution at a 50/50 mix
let sit 24 hours, - no more than that or it can weaken the mag
rinse and let dry
then on a HOT and sunny day apply volume 40 or higher peroxide with a paint brush to your mags
let sit 3-4 hours rinse and  flip the mag and apply the other side and let sit 3-4 hours again

I have had to do this as much a 4-5 time per side to get back to white depending on how yellow they are.
This set took 3 applications per side

after

this rare early white set took 6 times, they were so yellowed when i bought them at a swap meet , i thought they were faded yellow

These are great results. I did use the volume 40 and some sun and they did come out whiter.
The sun is definitely the key. I did the opposite sides same day but later on in the day when the sun was lower and it didn't do anything. Still waiting for a good sunny day to finish them up b
