One of my favorites was the S&M challenger. Techniques were pretty f'n cool also IMO.

I agree paradigm, that was the bike to have in the mid to late 90's. GT dominated the 90's mostly because Gary Ellis was almost unstoppable. I must admit I was a huge John Purse fan. He was hectic fast on a Redline.

The brands that bulleyejunkie mentioned I only saw in magazines like Snap and BMX Plus but never at the tracks.

Awesome ride!!

I still have my original GT Interceptor race bike from 1997, it was the only GT my parents could afford but in my eyes it was the most beautiful thing I ever saw. lol

Cheers, I could never afford one bitd and to be honest it was too good for my "skills".
I raced a second hand Mach One and before that a Falcon Pro. Both were far from top end smile

+1 on the Challenger mentioned above

Beautiful specimen, but those suckers cracked.  I think the Robinson Pro XL frame in all its variants formed the basis for a no-nonsense race machine that looked awesome -- especially in polished or white.

good list but you forgot Cannondale, Kastan , Airborne , Clayborn , Hawk, S&M Challenger.

that's what was hot at my track.

yes he did win a lot but most uf that was because he trained like a mad man. you could have given him any high end bike or mid end and he could shred at the track and bring home a win. at the bike shop I worked at mid 90's we sent lots of those box frames in for warranty replacement. but to be far some of them were probable used as there race and trail bike. so that helped them brake crack faster.

Late 90's

You can't go past ELF, S&M, the GT and Powerlite frames were great as well, the Huffy Primus was a popular frame that rode well, it's more about geometry than brand, yeah there were some out there frame designs and cool looking gimmicks, but you can't go passed the classic's !

Re: Best Racing Bike of the Late 90s?

Yeah, perront, you're right, that frame model was recalled because they had some issues with them cracking.  It's odd, because the newer box style frames have the same head tube design.  I let my local bike shop swap the frame on my 97 GT Speeed Series cruiser, but there was no way in hell I was giving them my team model xxl for a non-team model GT.  I totally fell on the floor the first time I saw that bike for sale at my local bike shop when I went there to help a friend pick out a new bike.  It totally reminded me of a combination of an old PK and the GT pro I used to race as a kid.  I'm totally stoked I bought that bike and have held on to it all these years.  cool

Re: Best Racing Bike of the Late 90s?

I still want a GT Box but it has to be 97-98 speed with all decals intact. Only way I can seem ti find a one if its a nos one that someone wants wayy too much for or it 99+ power series. And I am done refinishing bikes, so I cant take a cheap power series and give it 97-98 speed series look.

Collection Complete. If you want to see my actual bikes http://bmxmuseum.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=633623. I stopped adding to MY BIKES because of hassle of uploading

HuffyRider87 claims I'm a 'seathole' because he low-balled me on a bike, claiming its worth nothing and 'just a Huffy' and I told his ass whats up. Just a Huffy you wanted, and dont have. LOL.

Re: Best Racing Bike of the Late 90s?

If you're talking about completes....the GT Team Series and early Ultrabox's, the top of the line Powerlite's and Robinson's and the Huffy and DK Legend. I feel the Redline's of that time had crappy handling and many had those stupid aluminum forklifter style bars and the Schwinn's and Haro's all came with crappy cranks with a pinch bolt.

My 99 is stock other than taking the plastic chainguard off it to ride it around the track once ...sealed cartridge hubs,  SUN BFR's, Tioga Comp III's and Profiles. I actually likes the way it rides vs my GT Team Series, but that's my opinion

Definitely a badass bike, though they were a bit short for me.  Dan's was selling them for $650, but then dropped them down to $399...I couldn't help but pick up a blue one!  Also, the XL stem that came with mine had a small chip on the corner.  I contacted them, and they quickly shipped me a XXL to replace it, without asking me to return the stock one.

This is a photo a friend sent me right before he sold this a few months ago.  I always wanted to trade bars with him for my gt bars and his yellow slam bars on my powerlite pictured above.

So for me the two main bikes were box series and p61.

Box series was very popular for sure.

Robinson, powerlite, elf, s&m gt and to a lesser amount were the huffy, weird Newman frame mongoose, and monocoque haro and specialized etc.

I think those halos cracked easy so they were not around as much I the late 90's
