I "might" have scored...

So a good friend sends me a text which says "you want this thing or should I just toss it out?" I told him "ah, send it my way, I'll find somethin to do with it..."
The serial number starts with "RA5".  Is there such a thing? I've only seen "RA-7's" listed for sale here. any codes to break down the serial number and find out what year?

Re: I "might" have scored...

it's an RA7, and judging by the serial starting with a 5 it is more than likely a 1983. race inc alloy frames (and se pk rippers for that matter) starting in 1980 had serials RA2 through RA6 which was in 1984 when the company shut down. it is usually agreed that the number changed by year but there is no definite proof. judging by this formula, yours is probably an 83. however, the guys at race inc didn't worry too much about making things exactly as they should be, so it is very possible that they screwed up the serial and this frame could be even earlier, or the dropout could be a left over welded onto a frame in 1984. but, any race inc expert will tell you it's probably an 83.

as for the bike itself, i am in awe. you got a hell of a score for free. the forks will set you back a hundred or two, but you've got the start to a nice survivor project right here. the cranks and pedals look to be in great survivor shape too. and that worn og headtube is so beautiful, i would kill for a frame like that. the stuff people give away...... big_smile

you could go old school 79/80 with race inc bars and fork, etc or build it newer with gt pro bars and landing gear. thats a nice year for a race inc to have fo sho. congrats man

Re: I "might" have scored...

These are the Redline forks I'm gonna put on there. They're the cheaper taiwan versions but it's the closest I have to "era correct".

Yey or Ney?

Re: I "might" have scored...

Ney!  That deserves early 80s forks.

"That LiL Holeshot I built a couple years ago that took Best Mini was a nice bike, but I'll bet most people didn't even see the greatest thing about it. The frame and fork was in awesome condition, and when I started to build it I found residue of car wax in the welds. That means at one time, long ago some little kid enjoyed that bike so much that he sat and stared at it while he waxed it to perfection. That's the kinda stuff I appreciate, and can relate to very well."  John De Bruin-6/21/09

Let Texasbmx have it...
