1988 GT Ricochet

A Trials bike from GT designed by Hans Rey

I stumbled upon this unique bike a few months ago because I needed the hubs. (Tell me you haven't done it) It actually turned out to be a pretty neat and fun ride. Designed by Hans Rey, the father of Trials and Mountain Biking in the U.S. It's pretty much stock, it came with superlace wheels but I've replaced them with high flange 48h hubs with Araya rims. It has 150mm Power Series cranks, Magura hydraulic brakes, and bolt-on bash guard. One thing interesting that I noticed was how much the geometry closely resembled today's BMX street bikes, like the slammed rear end and the long top tube. Check out the films of BMX Trials riders on You-Tube, they do some pretty wild stuff!!

WOW, what a cool bicycle. do you know if these were available to the public, in a shop, special order, team issue? i really like the geometry, and those cranks look pretty light but strong. verry cool.

Re: 1988 GT Ricochet

You really cleaned that bike up and made it look almost new again! That thing looks really good.

Re: 1988 GT Ricochet

Hey, I just picked one of these up today, and started doing some research on it, and my first click from google was right back here at the museum. I guess mine is an '88 too!

The guy I got mine from is the original owner and he was telling me that the forks were recalled and the replacement forks were a slightly different color.

Cool bike!

There was definitely a problem with the forks, most of them cracked near the crown.. Including mine. I have repaired them however.

Re: 1988 GT Ricochet

do you have Shimano DX pedals on yours too? It looked like it from the pix. What kind of brakes do you have on that?

Brakes are Magura Hydraulic, the pedals in the picture are Specialized but I have since put some yellow DMR Magnesium pedals on it.

Re: 1988 GT Ricochet

those are some sweet brakes! I remember reading about them back in the day in Mt bike action.

I've been riding mine a little lately. working on balance and trying to get that front wheel up. My bash guard is toast so I'll have to get something welded in order to use it.

There's a guy on ebay that sells the exact bash guard for this bike, I'll pm you the link when I get home from work today.  The Magura rim brakes are still used on a lot of the new Mod Trials bikes (20").  However, they usually only use disc brakes on the Stock Trials bikes (26").

Re: 1988 GT Ricochet

yeah, I've seen the bash guard, but it is the weld that is the issue. I need to get it rewelded or come up w/a different solution.

Thanks!

Hmm.. I wonder if one of those bolt-on guards will work..
