'83 Diamond Back Harry Leary Turbo ALL OG!

Thought I would share this bike and story, as it's one of the cleanest I have come across, and has never before been posted online.  I got a phone call last month while I was on my way to the Midwest show, from the original owner of this '83 Turbo. He told me he had originally worked for the importer of Diamond Back, Centurion, and a few other brands, and had purchased this in '83 directly from the importer he worked with. He also purchased a Centurion that he sold locally a few years ago. Recently after doing some research about the Turbo online at the library, he decided to sell it. He had a fair price in mind (he saw one like his had sold for over $5000), but no email accounts, or online knowledge of how to sell it. Someone gave him my phone number just as a person who could help him, despite me being 2500 miles away. I'm very glad he did, his price was fair, and within hours I was able to have someone meet him with cash in hand to make the purchase and ship the bike to me assembled with only the bars and pedals  removed. This Turbo was kept in low light in a very dry climate with a cover on it for most of it's life. It shows no signs of wear from being ridden. The bike came to me with MKS Grafight pedals as original, and I still have them with the bike, but for the photo's,  I installed NOS SR pedals. Personally I think they help offset the chainguard and reflectors that I refuse to remove, and I didn't need to use a wrench to change them, since they were already removed for shipping. Nothing else on the bike has ever been removed or even adjusted since '83 when it was new. Grips are still flexible. This is one of a very few that still have all the original components. I have learned a lot from the hours I have just sat and studied this bike, I love the way the factory lined up the tire logos with the valve stem, that's something I did not expect, and also the protective film on the rear drops that is mostly intact. Although I am aware of one other that has the chainguard and reflectors with it, this is the first one I have seen that still has it installed (with rubber lined mounts). As good as the bike would look with it removed, I just can't bring myself to take it off. 1983 was an odd year for these bikes as I have learned a lot about the different components that they could have came with. This is probably the 5th one I have owned, and I have another one undergoing a full restoration at the moment. Unique to this bike are the chrome bars, which the original owner insist came in that finish and were not altered. I see no signs that the grips were ever removed, and there is no evidence that they could have been painted or swapped out. All parts that are date coded (like brakes, hubs, cables, frame and fork) are '83. Araya 1.75 rims, double butted spokes, fat/skinny yellow label Comp 3's, black plated Tange headset, 181mm cranks, tech 3 levers without boots, just some of the components that could have been different on the '83
Hope you guys enjoy seeing this, it's a pleasure to share.
As an April fools joke, some of my friends though I should have posted it Thursday with a caption of "has a few scratches, planning to restore", but this is one bike I won't even joke about touching. My favorite quote so far is from someone who saw the bike in person and said, "That bike belongs in the Smithsonian", I would like to agree, but I'm not donating it. For now it's fine on display here.
Special thanks to Dave "Fitpays", Chris "Hags", and Joe for listening to me talk about it for 10 hours of our trip to Indiana, and Matt "Mr Furious" for picking it up and shipping it. Also Adam "Orangecrrrush" for his info.

So, if someone brought you that bike and wanted to powder it, would you do the job?

OK here we go again.., I'll begin with it's an amazing bike, amazing score, Chip is an amazing person, does amazing work!....now I think I've covered everything. Do we really believe that the famous phone call that Chip received ( as stated by Chip ), would have ever happened, if Chip wasn't so highly regarded as, if Chip would not have earned his "DO RESPECT" in the BMX World. If Chip was a plain O' Chip from wherever., would the two have ever met? Now again, even after me saying that Chip is a "Great Guy", does "Amazing Work".., let's see the insults now come my way!......that is all the MODS and ADMIN approved insults! Note: I'll just sit back and wait for my next ADMIN MESSAGE ALERT!

I wasn't even going to answer that, but for those that don't know me, I definitely would refuse the job, even if I knew it would go elsewhere to be done. I have talked many people out of restoring certain bikes that I believed would not easily be replaced, or had more value being left alone.
