Flea Market/Swap Meet Vultures

Well flipping BMX and hard to find bike parts is now firmly entrenched. Rat bastids that dont care a rats behind about bikes are buying them up and selling for huge dollars. This is what I found out today. I got to the place around 7:30 Hella early right???
Well everything with expensive parts and one GT was sold. I was cursing at the one guy, no wonder us collectors cant find crap.

I found out the guy has a store and buys the stuff as he is setting up a stand. Some work the stand, he goes and buys everything worth anything. This all before the place is even open!! Not because he loves to collect or wants to restore bikes but greed.

Before you think it unrational of me to be so angry. Remember what Jesus did at the Temple? He got so irate at the greed and corruption he cursed them out and flipped over the tables. This jackal is making a fortune, selling bikes for sometimes more then ten times what he paid. Not because he ran out of room for his collection and had to sell, not because he didnt want to part with his prized bike and it took so much to pry it from his hands. Greed. Plain and simple. Leaves us collectors with nothing to find.

And the greed continued. I went to another place. Mind you over the few months I have been going, never found anything. Now I know why, but heck I'll try another place. I spot a bike with Profiles, I check the size 180s. Bike is a 97, so Id guess the cranks are 90s cranks. I dont want the bike but will sell it for what I paid so its like getting the cranks free. Whoever buys the bike from me will still be getting a great price so everyone wins right?

Wrong. I asked the guy how much. He sized me up and said $65. I said will you take $50. He said $60. So I bought it. Great deal right? Wrong. I get to the truck to put it in the back of my SUV and I notice the serial number and a price tag!?!?!? What was the price? Just $40!!! The guy saw I looked like I could pay more and raised the price. Greed. Now my first ever find also has me fuming.

Re: Flea Market/Swap Meet Vultures

A bike with a decent set of Profiles for 60 bucks ain't bad.........even if the F/F is worthless.

Re: Flea Market/Swap Meet Vultures

F/F isn't worthless, Im just not into newer bikes. It is a 98 Schwinn Predator Pro, nice parts group and I will sell it for $60 (ill throw on some 4130 1 piece cranks to replace the Profiles) Someone will get a nice bike for a great price. I'm not mad at the price I paid, but that he raised the price. I didnt see the price tag as it was just tape on the bottom of the bottom bracket. From now on I will check the bike thoroughly.
BTW the stuff the guy bought today was probably worth a couple thousand dollars, it woulda been a collectors dream to score just one of the bikes. But he bought every single one worth anything.

Ok this is the bike from Genes's , though it was made in 97 it is the 98 model. It has some parts upgrades.

Re: Flea Market/Swap Meet Vultures

racer -

I used to work at a bookstore in a flea market here in Dallas BITD with my mom when I was a kid (VIKON VILLAGE for you locals!!)

The flea market was only open weekends.

But - I could go in there anytime, thru the whole flea market, all week long. Most people would just cover up their crap with a tarp or whatever (this tells you how long ago it was,, when you could leave your front door unlocked..) so I could like check everything out and play with it and whatever.

I'd hang out with the vendors, especially the dudes that sold chinese stars and knives and nunchucks and stuff smile

Anyways - we'd get in loads of books and magazines and whatever, sort them, pull the real rare ones, put price stickers on the rest and stock the shelf for next weekend. We did this to make money - to live. My family still deals in rare books/manuscripts.

anyways - my point of all this is - that you got to get on the 'inside' bro.

You got to hang out with the bike people running the stalls - feed them, BS with them, offer to go get them a soda, whatever. Be there every weekend.

Let them get to see you all the time. Act interested in their story - even if all you want is the bikes they have. Most of them (in my experience) are

whacked-out fred sanford crazy-as-hell old people that live down by the river collecting junk. I dunno what you're workin with over there.

Anyways - dunno if that gives you any help or not - but you gotta get yo'self in between the guy with the bikes and the guy buying all them up and beat him to the punch.

Please don't take any of this wrong - you my homeboy and all and I'm not tryin to bag on you or anything - just offering up how I see this situation.

$.02

Amen brother!!!  That is some righteous anger!  Nothing wrong with that, I would pray against his bike hording and greed!  mad

Re: Flea Market/Swap Meet Vultures

i know a couple of people that are like that here. one is supposed to be my friend. we have a thrift store that gets bikes and sells for 5-10 bux. i saw one i wanted for parts and it was 10 bux. i was gonna go home and get the cash and my friend that was with me offered them 5 on the spot and bought it out from under me. some people are just wrong. but makes it worthwhile when u get a score and they want parts big_smile

Love anything PR1MO.

Re: Flea Market/Swap Meet Vultures

my advice is get there at 630 and put a gun to the guys head when he pulls up.

THIS IS A 90'S RARE GEM - MR. HOFFMAN, MR. HAWK AND MANY OTHER CELLEBRITIES WOULD BE PROUD TO HAVE THIS BIKE AMONG THEIR COLLECTION.

Re: Flea Market/Swap Meet Vultures

...and I'm by no means a christian, but I've read the Bible a coupla times, and MY understanding of the thing was not that people were gambling and speculating and whatnot.  His problem was that they were doing all of this IN THE DAMN TEMPLE!  Pretty good be Jesus wouldn't give a rats ass about the same thing going on at the swap meet.
