pedal axle conversion: 1/2 to 9/16 or vise versa

so you finally found those pedals you want on your bike, but they are for one piece cranks (1/2" axle) and you need the for three piece cranks (9/16" axle)? too bad....unless of course you have an extra set of 9/16 pedals with beat up bodies but good axles....heres what you do.....

this was done with sr customs as the receiving pedals, and beat up fusion pedals with good axles/bearings being the axle donors, and it only takes about 10 minutes to complete

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE GREASE AND THE PROPER TOOLS BEFORE DOING THIS....ADJUSTABLE WRENCHES WORK BUT ARE NEVER A GOOD SUBSTITUTE FOR THE PROPER SIZE WRENCHES AD SOCKETS

follow each instruction for each pedal

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j10/ninjaleezy/pedals001.jpg

1. remove the dust caps, most can be popped off with a small screwdriver, but some actually unscrew

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j10/ninjaleezy/pedals009.jpg
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j10/ninjaleezy/pedals010.jpg

2. unscrew the retaining bolts (unlike the left pedals themselves, the retaining bolts on the left pedal unthread normally i.e. "lefty-loosey" because they use a lock washer type system). use open ended wrench to hold the axle in place while you loosen the nut

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j10/ninjaleezy/pedals.jpg
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j10/ninjaleezy/pedals003.jpg

3. remove the lock washer, the style varies depending on the pedals, but they all do the same thing, and usually they just slide off

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j10/ninjaleezy/pedals004.jpg

4. remove the inner nut/bearing race, they unread the same way the outer nut does, but use a slightly larger socket

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j10/ninjaleezy/pedals005.jpg

5. keep all the bearings together and organized, its a good idea to get a head count on them because the generally have loose ball, both of these sets of pedals have 13 bearings on each side

6. slide the axle out and remove the inner bearings and keep together

7. be sure the axles are the same length

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j10/ninjaleezy/pedals006.jpg

8. clean all contact surfaces and remove all old grease and dirt

9. regrease and use plenty of grease, i used phil wood waterproof grease, apply liberally as this is the main defense against water and corrosion

10. installation is opposite of removal

11. finished product (before cleaning up extra grease)

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j10/ninjaleezy/pedals007.jpg

12. notice the axle size difference? voila pedal converted

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j10/ninjaleezy/pedals008.jpg

13. follow the steps for the other side

its always a good idea to keep theold axles and hardware just in case you want to reinstall the originals

one of my favorite parts about this is the fact that although these pedals were made about 20 years apart, the axles are interchangeable

The ones are SR customs? But what were the other ones?

Whats the best way to get all the bearing balls back in, i've ruined 2 pedals already trying this.  All the balls are all over the place, all over the floor.

Lay a sheet of bubble wrap underneath the pedals

quick question looking at the gt half inch pedal. could the black alloy be polished to a silver finish, similar to that of the pedal, or would i need
to replace the pedal axel.

Re: pedal axle conversion: 1/2 to 9/16 or vise versa

I have seen adapters that basically are a reducer bushing. The 1/2 inch threads into the Bushing and then the outer thread is 9/16 inch. Not sure where I seen them.
