SE Big Ripper: creeky crank problem...

Brand new SE Big Ripper. Cranks creek, crackle, and pop. I've loosened/tightened the hex nuts in the arms to no avail. Any ideas on how to fix that? I'm not good with cranks. I've never been good with cranks. sad

Re: SE Big Ripper: creeky crank problem...

First question I have is how sure are you the crank are to blame? Drivetrain noises are the toughest to hone in on - as the sound could be coming from the pedals, the cranks, the chain, or the freewheel.

Did you get it at a local bike shop? If so, they should be able to diagnose and fix it.

Try removing the bolts, and arms- if possible, and grease up all of the threads.

What ED said.

But SE has been known to have $hitty freewheels too.

Re: SE Big Ripper: creeky crank problem...

Thanks for the suggestions!

I took apart the cranks and re-greased. Still Creaks!
I pulled back the rear tire and made the chain tighter. Less creaks but Creaks!
I replaced pedals with some sweet Tripple Traps… Creaks!

Flipping the bike over, if i squeeze the bottom and top of the chain together, I can get a crack/creak… seems to be coming from around the sprocket area? It's so hard for me to tell.

Regarding the 'cheap freewheel' comments, this appears to be an ACS Crossfire Freewheel (15T). If I were to replace, what is the best alternative?

Re: SE Big Ripper: creeky crank problem...

The chain should not be super tight. Here is a good guide: http://www.parktool.com/blog/repair-hel … peed-bikes

The ACS on your bike is a decent freewheel, and a different brand from the ones that caused many headaches to SE owners a few years back. You can always try another ACS or Shimano freewheel to see if that is where the noise is coming from.

Re: SE Big Ripper: creeky crank problem...

Hmmm. I'm wondering if maybe the rollers on the chain may be the culprit....

PUll the BB and grease the threads. Aluminum frames creak like crazy if the BB shell threads are dry. My friend just bought a Big Ripper and the frist thing I did when he had creaks was pull the cranks, pedals and BB and grease the threads.

No more creaks.

His freewheel also shit the bed asap, like evryone elses.

Re: SE Big Ripper: creeky crank problem...

I don't know your exact problem, but back in the day "creaky cranks" were actually "creaky bottom bracket cups". Maybe look the the bottom bracket?

Re: SE Big Ripper: creeky crank problem...

Maybe the frame is cracked? That will cause a creaking sound.

Still searching for my missing bikes from BITD. 1979 Blue Max serial: CI9 221346 and 1977 Webco serial: 42667. Both were last seen at Spoke and Sport Bicycles in Spokane, WA around 1984. $600 reward if found!!

Re: SE Big Ripper: creeky crank problem...

I had the same problems with my 2013 Big Ripper. I replaced the bottom bracket with a Profile Euro Bottom Bracket. I replaced the free wheel with a White Industries Freewheele. I replace the cranks with Redline Dual Pinch. No more squeeks.http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p182 … 8cff90.jpg
