A "DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH"...............or just cubic zirconia?

Saw a CL ad for a 24" BMX cruiser, no pics, and no brand listed.  Figured I'd give it a shot.  Got some blurry pics of a pieced-together cruiser, claimed to be a Redline frame.  For the price I couldn't resist.

Re: A "DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH"...............or just cubic zirconia?

The spray paint made me wonder, but the welds sold me.  So I got it home and tore it down.  Off with the paint:

The guy admitted to "sanding it down", then painting it black.  Later on he decided to spray the silver over everything!
Looks like it was white originally, and remnants of blue are visible.

The frame is in decent shape, the welds look fresh without all of the paint.

Not sure what year/model, but it looks like some of the 2006's in the museum.

I think we have a winner!  Looks exactly like the 2007's in the museum, and the cranks have the slightest hint of the Free Agent logo left on them.

Re: A "DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH"...............or just cubic zirconia?

Made a little progress.  Planning to keep the costs low on this, just want to spruce it up and use it as a beer-run machine!
Got the bars and forks down to raw, and had a little fun with the worn-out GT stem and gave it a new color. Polished the original bolts and the top cap, all of which look like new!

When I see a decent bike spray bombed like that I can't help but think there is some poor guy out there wishing he hadn't left his bike unattended.

Re: A "DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH"...............or just cubic zirconia?

I felt the same as you guys at first.  I actually spent a good deal of time reminiscing with the guy who sold it to me and his 10 year old son, who talked about the day his dad got it 3 years ago.  Kinda changed my mind.

Re: A "DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH"...............or just cubic zirconia?

Even though it came with a front brake lever installed as a rear brake, I figured I would try to clean it up a bit.

Couldn't resist mocking it up, even though I still have a ton of work to do on the frame.

Re: A "DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH"...............or just cubic zirconia?

Did some work on the cranks.  Got one arm nearly stripped back to bare metal and polished, and started on the other.  Polished the brakes, and sourced a Tuf-Neck chain wheel for later.

Had to take a break and join the missus for a mini high school reunion, down in San Clemente.  I know, what a sacrifice!  Ribs on the slow cooker and plenty of good beer.  The view wasn't bad either.

Re: A "DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH"...............or just cubic zirconia?

Yessir!!!  I was planning on doing basically the same to mine,, blasting it down, polishing the aluminum to look like chrome abd use the older cursive font decals. kinda do a little retro thing to it. A friend of mine always jabbered on about how he had a sick free agent limo back in the day that got swooped, i was going to do my ambush 24 up and hook him up.

The seat seemed appropriate, but I think I'll go another route.

It would be a lot of work, but definitely worth it.  Your friend would be stoked.  cool
