1986 CW Racing California Shaker

Black and Pink Ceppie Maes Tribute bike

Was going for a bike like the one Ceppie rode in the how-to/interview in the July 1986 BMX Action. Thanks to everyone who sent me pix of him riding for reference. You'd be surprised how many little differences there were between his bikes in lots of the pix. Anyway, here's my tribute to Ceppie Maes.
* Frame/Fork: CW
* Bars: CW Freestyle
* Sturmey-Archer Drum Brake hubs
* MKS pedals
* Comp ST tires
* ACS Z-rims
* Skyway Spinmaster
* ACS levers
* A'me grips
* Shotgun II seat
* Seat Post: Uni

CW definitely had some diverse riders!  This bike/rider sparked another era of innovation in Freestyle!

Killer bike.  Great attention to detail.  I still remember that article where Ceppie showed off his drum brakes

Just awesome!  I was always a huge fan of Ceppie and of course, his black/pink CW.  Great build.

You RESTORED and HONORED true bmx history here...These are the kind of builds that brought me back to the hobby for good. That color scheme with the pink detail is classic. I am going to look at your other builds they look sweet in the preview pages..FAV coming!

Re: 1986 CW Racing California Shaker

Just going through my pictures and found these. Here's some of the steps that went into building this one.

Got these parts together and had them powdered.

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff86/donvader88/100_9654.jpg

Took this seat, dyed it black & polished the guts. (This seat has since cracked and it's replaced with another Shot Gun II.)

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff86/donvader88/Ceppie%20project%20bike/ShotGunIIblackafter02.jpg

Couldn't find the stickers for anything so I found a small flat scan of a set, re-drew it in illustrator and had them made.
I totally had to make the California Freestyler one on my own because I couldn't even find that great of a picture of one, much less a flat scan. Had help finding a similar font for the freestyler word and had to adjust a couple letters a little, then copied the California word form a California Raisins picture, lol, and drew that in illus too.

Waiting on the bars, post, and stem (all black) to arrive this week from the powder coater.  Mine is going to be black parts and CW Lavender/white.  I love this one in all black though.

Re: 1986 CW Racing California Shaker

CW riders were always my fav's BITD. Dizz and Ceppie rocked it hardcore.
I was never really into the trends back then, nor am I now.
Had to go against the grain I suppose. Great build, thanks for doing it justice.
Might have to build one of my own someone day.

Still lovin' this bike...No hopes in building one yet!

Re: 1986 CW Racing California Shaker

You would not want to sell that cracked Cycle pro seat would you?  Do you still have it?

Re: 1986 CW Racing California Shaker

Thanks! The wheels ride super smooth and the brakes work pretty incredible. The rear brakes could work better without the Spinmaster detangler, but they still work pretty good with it too. I don't want to skid on those tires anyway, so it's just as well I guess.

Re: 1986 CW Racing California Shaker

Thank you! There will be a few updates soon too, maybe within a few weeks. I have some forks with lower fork peg holes coming soon, I'm gonna switch out the spinmaster cable stop by the headset with a black bearing cup with the cable stop on it, I have a set of those bars that Ceppie's using in the photo ready for it, and some bubble font black A'me grips instead of those newer ones. It's not gonna look that different, but a little closer to that photo I was going off of for sure.
