Re: Fake alloy Hatta MX-100

Pics.
4 Photos below show the top nut. The silver one is from an NOS headset I bought from Jeff Haney. I don't drop names but in this instance I find it necessary to show I got it from a legitimate authority on BMX. The headset is mounted on a bike now but I used a headlock so I had the top not available for reference pictures. Black top nut is from the suspected fake.

Note the slightly different shape of the wrench flats. Real Hatta's are thinner. Both are the same height.

http://i669.photobucket.com/albums/vv58/gauchercolin/DSC_0002_zps0419910c.jpg

Below are pics of the suspected fake and my lightly used Hatta Speedline. Speedlines are the same as regular alloy Hatta's except for the lines. Note the original one has no anno on the threads while the "fake does. Original Hatta has a higher height at roughly 16.4 mm while the "fake" on the left is shorter at around 15.8mm.

The obvious tell tale is the cup radius. Note the different shape of the cup radius of the original on the right vs the suspected fake on the left. The radius is more rounded on the fake compared to the original Speedline.

Notice the variance in cup wall thickness. original on right has a thinner wall than the other on the left.

It looks fake to me. Might be made by Crocodile like the fake Tanges?

I dont think you can compare two different models and say one is fake. You need to compare the same.

I did compare it to the same model on a bicycle I own which was mentioned earlier in the thread. The MX-100 and Speedline are the same. One has lines engraved in it and that is it. I compared the suspected fake to a silver MX-100 mounted on my Champion and it is different. My silver MX-100 is the same as the black Speedline. Cup radius is the same as is cup thickness. It is quite apparent to look at these qualities even with the headset mounted. It doesn't take a genius to discover there are differences when looking at both in front of you. Comparing it to the Speedline pictures and from my own observations looking at my original silver one, proves that in my opinion.

I'm here for information to compare the one I think is not real to real examples which is why I posted photos so others can look. I'm not pointing any fingers yet. I'd like this to be real, but I don't.  Others need to post some detailed shots of real ones or suspected fake ones so we can all compare photographs and come to a conclusion. Until then, we'll never know.

Re: Fake alloy Hatta MX-100

whats the difference, price?

I just buy my headsets from Pork and ride my bike, not sit and study the thickness and radius of a headset.

I usually don't look at such things either and I didn't notice till I happened to have the two cups side by side and one looked off. I compared to the other Hatta I have and that was that. I was about to press it into a bike frame which is why I noticed. I paid a decent amount of cash for it which is why I started to examine it. If I paid under $100, I would not really care. There is also 3' of snow on the ground here so I can't just go ride my bike so I do have a bit of spare time to compare and measure headsets.

Re: Fake alloy Hatta MX-100

Do you think maybe the anno wore off the threads by screwing it on and off the fork?every hatta I've seen has always had anno on the threads .i have seen a few of them but probably not as many as you guys though

I was thinking that also but the threads have no anno present and no remnants. The fella I bought the Speedline from had it in a show bike and was not really used. The races are clean as a whistle with zero sign of wear. Not even a wrench mark.  Just installation and removal marks on the cups.

Either way, I'm not out a ton of cash but figured the info here could be useful for comparison for those that care. I still have no real proof mine is a fake or not. I heard rumors of fakes and this one looked odd so I looked at it closely and noticed differences.

So are you saying this one is real or fake? hmm

This MX-10 is real.  You can see the thickness of the bottom cup even while wrapped and in my crappy cell pic.

I was just showing a pic of the box because getset mentioned fake boxes, as far as the headset you can't compare to what Coco is talking about because mine is a MX-10 not a MX-100.

I don't know Jeff Haney, and I'm far from an expert on Hatta headsets, but I bought 2 NOS MX-100s from "snorton" about 4 years ago. There's a good chance both are fake, or at least refinished. The ano was just waaay too clean and unfaded. Believe what you want...but I just wanted to throw that out there since he definitely was one of the guys you could trust to have authentic parts...kinda like the guy who sold those fake tuf necks and now the suspected fake hatta.

Nope, no box and mine came out of the USA.

Hold tight dudes......photos will be up in around an hour or so. Lighting was shite last night so my pics were hard to tell differences since both are black.

Did it come San Diego?  All you guy have to do is search ebay hatta headset and you will figure it out.

I've been told that my...
red Bullseye Hubs ($275), red Tuf Neck Seat Post($75), and red Hatta Headset($160) were all fakes or repops!

All came from the same seller.

All I can't say is I feel upset and hurt cause I really thought this guy was an upfront honest guy. I was never told that these were fakes or repops.

Thinking I was getting a nice deal or help from a fellow BMXer now I feel I paid too much for non NOS stuff!

Re: Fake alloy Hatta MX-100

That same seller out of CA, has been doing this for years. fake hattas, clamps, chainrings, etc etc  His name and his cohorts have been discussed here and elsewhere many many times.

IMPORTANT!!! when buying parts do a simple search on here or other bmx websites. Or do a random google search for things like
fake kashimax seats
fake bullseye hubs
fake hatta headsets
fake thruster seatposts
fake tuf necks or pro necks
it doesnt matter what your wanting to buy- just put fake or repop in front of the item
usually youll get hits if there is enough talk or suspicion about a certain item.
also, look at a members feedback, if you see 35 positive feedbacks on the same item, it should raise doubts.
that particular ebay seller has been selling those headsets non stop for ay least 3 years

fuk the aholes that say its a waste of time. if you truly believe there is something amiss then get the word out. it may take time but sooner or later youll get the support as more and more people get informed. say nothing and this shit will keep happening. thats what these jokers are counting on. internet sales that are spaced far enough apart the buyers cant do comparisons
