'84 & '85 Redline RL20II Knowledge

I am looking to gain more knowledge on Redline’s ’84 RL20II as well as the ‘85s. Simply put, JAPANESE’S MADE.

REDLINE ’84 RL20II
-    Were there any prototypes and/or advertising?
-    How Many ‘84s were made?
-    Are there any pics of the RL20II w/o pegs?
-    Are RD stamped Redlines only ’84 models?
-    Were all the ’84 models chrome underneath the paint?
-    Were the ’84 models introduced in ’83 or in ’84?
-    Did the ’84 models have REDLINE stamped on the steering tube? And if not then, when?

REDLINE ’85 RL20II
-    Were ’85s the first model with partial chrome (forks and rear)?
-    What month were the last ’85s produced in Japan?
-    Were any other ‘85s frameset transported to Taiwan?

If able, can you please include pics where necessary to help your explanation?

Once again, just ’84 & ’85 models. Thanks

Larry - Thanks for the link.

Based on the information from the link, it can be surely seen that the bike below is definitely different from those we are accustomed to see. The twin tube does not have the brace between them.

Thanks for the link, but I believe the questions I asked are more specific to the overall '84 & '85 models.

roll I saw discussion regarding the '84 model and pictures of the prototype in there, so how was that not relevant to your question? Anyway, good luck with your research.

Re: '84 & '85 Redline RL20II Knowledge

A topic discussed on many occasions but always interesting. I will give my opinion based on knowledge I have gained talking to other 84 owners but nothing is set in stone here. It's def a grey area because no documentation exists.

Redline got into game with freestyle with prostyler in 84.  Early models had no holes in forks and then later edition incorporated them. Serial numbers were RD xx xxx. Some time in late 1984 the rl20-ii was being produced in Japan. These were the legendary first batch of 250 production made rl22s they came in solid paint schemes ( frame & forks ) colour matched . Colours were same as what would be released in 1985 so teal, radberry, white no yellow has ever surfaced with RD serial so it's unknown if that colour was available yet. Most that turn up are solid whites hence the reference " all white" but it's actually incorrect.

These 84s did not come in kits as far as I know like the 85s did . This is pure speculation but I believe these were prototype models intended to be used as feelers in the now hot freestyle BMX market. My FF came from Australia which is extremely rare. It's condition showed it probably spent its life there must have gone to major retailer there to show the newest redline product. This is pure speculation but very few 85s were imported there so 84 would be rarity.

All 1984 made rl22s have RD 06xxx designation . Japanese traits are straight chain stays, braised fork bosses ( not welded ) ,some frames came with or without top tube cable guide mount. There is no regularity to how those were put on. Only Japanese made frames came like this . Powder coating was not invented at this time all frames were chrome under paint. Any survivors can prove that . Mine was I'm sure all rest were too.

As for transition to 1985 somewhere redline decided to chrome forks and rear quarter of frame giving it a very expensive looking finish. It was an expensive bike bitd!!! The 1985 rl22s started with RE serial numbers .

Well actually that's a zoomed in part of a 2 page spread ad for Redlines.

Here's another one

Re: '84 & '85 Redline RL20II Knowledge

That's a cool ad you don't see posted all the time. I've got little mechanical tidbit about 84 pegs. There is no way again to prove for sure but there seems to be a big difference in pegs that were stock on 84 RD serials that were shipped abroad . These were larger Allen head peg. Members on here that own 84s not bought in USA all have Allen head pegs. These were screwed into threaded nibs which I still had in my forks when I received them from OZ. the pegs are long gone but there are good examples of these pegs I do have photos ill post.

Here's another little treat for you guys that always ask how many are out there? The answer I don't F--king know but I've comprised a list of knowns here they are:

Caleb(sold ).  RD 06625.    OG white
Didi.              RD 06648.    OG white
Flaketown      RD 06685.    OG Teal
( Didi's frd).   RD 06722.     ---------
Tortuga.        RD 06727.     ----------
RD 06744.     White. ( Facebook Redline post member :Thorsten )
Redline 600.  RD 06761.     OG white
(?)pjbaz.       RD 06762.      ---------
(Unknown).   RD 06782.     OG white  it was rusted out
4130Bigr.      RD 06803.     OG Teal
RL Paulie.      RD 06817.     OG white
Subwax.        RD 06821.     Refinished radberry SOLD
Knallkopp.     RD 06824.     ---------
Unclevian.     RD 06826.     OG white
Fanofbmx.     RD 06846.     ( chrome ) paint gone
Shiznitme.     RD 06847.    OG Teal
Lalo-Barrera. RD 06878.     --------
Yarl--me.      RD 06882.     ---------
Spector007.  RD 06897.     --------- radberry OG
551slander.   RD 06933.    --------- ( unconfirmed )
Maltido6969  RD 06960      OG radberry ( now yellow )

There is one major mystery on one of the full paint job teal 84s. Instead of RD serial it's RE .
# RE003514 to my knowledge not another one exists in full original paint FF with an actual 1985 serial.

This is best list I have to date. I'm sure there are others out there. Not all of these are built. Some are not capable of being built its just a list of frames I have seen picture IDs of or read about in forums. Not all of these have correct forks.

Re: '84 & '85 Redline RL20II Knowledge

I got Fanofbmx to post best surviver to turn up IMO . It belongs to Unclevian , redline 600 is very close 2nd. The pegs I was referring to are shown mounted on white forks . The other raw forks were mine before I refinished . It came with those threaded nibs I believe those pegs with Allen heads screwed into those nibs. Export only because all American found 84s have normal classic knurled small peg. As a bonus I threw in pic of my FF and bars before they were built.

Re: '84 & '85 Redline RL20II Knowledge

I picked up this bike in early 1985 and always thought it was an '85 model. As you can see the frame and fork are radsberry and it was not chrome underneath.
