1996 GT Mach One

Rescued "barn fresh" racer with sweet components under the grime

The StoryI bought a lot of nine bikes from a picker who specializes in bikes. I bought the lot because of this bike. He thought it was a basket case because he found it in barn fresh condition. But, I saw, underneath the layers of sweat, rust, and grime a very nice bike. The paint on this surviver was great but filthy. It had S&M Slam Bars and a nice GT race stem, Odyssey Triple traps and a great set of wheels. Game on!
The Restore
Original Equipment on this very light American made early mid school includes frame, fork, stem, cranks and chain ring. Period correct components that came on the bike as I found it include vintage S&M Slam bars, Bullet Proof rear hub, Odyssey Triple Trap pedals, and Tektro V brakes. I added Kenda Comp III Tires, a NOS old school seat clamp that has been stripped and polished as well as new cables, housing and a NOS Tektro two finger lever. The cranks, bars and fork were in bad shape and needed to be completely soaked in vinegar for two days and then polished. Although they came back to life, they still suffer from some clouding in the chrome. However, they were just too nice to ignore and came out looking pretty good. This bike has been stripped, cleaned, reassembled, polished and is now a great ride.
