1987 Schwinn 26

New Old Stock Schwinn 26 inch Cruiser Frame and Fork BMX Build

THE STORY
By 1987 most of Schwinn's production had moved to Taiwan and Schwinn was partnering with Giant, who made the Schwinn approved Cruiser frames that year. When Schwinn went bankrupt in the 90's, Kraynick's Bike Shop in Pittsburgh saw an opportunity. Gerry Kraynick purchased a huge volume of parts from Schwinn distributors. Among the mass of used and NOS (New Old Stock) parts in Kraynick's bike shop are a few NOS cruiser frames. Like toys abandoned on misfit Island, these remaining frames are purple, pink and teal- total 80's color ways. Like a reindeer with a red nose, I have always found these frames attractive, hanging from the ceiling at Kraynicks in the customer work area. Yesterday Gerry sold me a frame and fork. Here is the build that has emerged from the Whistle Shop.
FEATURES This 1987 26 inch Schwinn BMX Style Cruiser features a New Old Stock (NOS) Frame and Fork made for Schwinn by Giant. It has been waiting 26 years to be built! Additionally, NOS Schwinn Moab 26x1.65 skin wall tires, a NOS layback seat post, NOS SR Seat Clamp and a custom shaved and polished Schwinn BMX quill stem as well as a custom covered seat in white, take this bike back to the future. It's so Rad, it makes me want to listen to Prince singing Purple Rain while as I wheelie down the street.
CONDITION AND RIDE It's a brand new frame and fork and was still wrapped when I bought it so it is in pristine condition. I have cleaned and waxed the frame and fork. With full BMX bars and a layback seat post, this bike offers an amazingly plush ride. Also, instead of the traditional 46/19 gearing, I have geared it at 44/18 with 165mm cranks so that it is now perfect for riding hills in Pittsburgh.
