1984 Haro Sport

Repainted in '90. Survivor condition.

I bought this bike sometime around 1990 to replace my first freestyle bike which was a brand new '84 Haro Sport that had gotten stolen. Repainted it immediately after buying it.  It has araya wheels, generic tires, Redline Forklifter stem, GT performer bars, stock cranks, chain wheel, etc. Has been hanging on the wall in garage just like it sits for about 20 + years now. My daughters interest in BMX got me interested in riding it again. So took it off the wall hooks, repacked the bearing with some fresh grease, aired up the tires and daughter and I went for a ride. I was hooked again LoL. Then I found the museum and my New addiction was in high gear.

Re: 1984 Haro Sport

You should restore it and leave it the same colour it is now. Everyone's got a white Haro Sport (particularly the '84 version) so it's cool to see one that looks different!

Re: 1984 Haro Sport

Yeah I wanted something different back then too. There were still a lot of white ones running around. I really wasn't a huge fan of yellow. I grew up working in my dads auto body shop and I just happened to have some fresh left over bright yellow acrylic enamel sitting in the paint cabinet. Wanted something different, so yellow it was. I hadn't seen any yellow ones anywhere at that time. So it worked out good. I am thinking I was going to redo it and make it like my first one that got stolen in the mid 80s. Which was white with green peregrines and white comp st freestyle tires, green haro bars, etc. I haven't gotten that far yet. Funny thing thinking back, I had that first one which a huge impression on my memory my first quality bike. Only had that for 3-4 years when it got stolen. This has been yellow for nearly 25 years now. A little sentimental about my build up on it back then too.

Re: 1984 Haro Sport

If you go back to the way it looked with your original bike (white/green) that will still be awesome. Don't often see an early Sport with green Peregrine mags, or green Haro bars. It must have been a cool ride. Don't blame you for being a bit sentimental about it. I have an '84 Gen 1 Sport frame and forks, with original white paint and decals - everyone says you should never repaint a survivor frame or bike - but, sometimes, I feel like it. It's just important to do things the way you like them, as it's your bike and what it means to you lies in more than just what colour it is. Look forward to seeing how your bike turns out. Post some pictures up if you do get it done.

Hey thanks for the compliments cuzg, yes that thing was cool (in my opinion) back in the day with the white frame and all the green parts.

I agree Flatlandfox. I remember falling in Love with the '84 Sport when I first seen it on the pages of one of the BMX mags at the time.

"Now you've got an excuse to play with all your Star Wars toys again" - Knocked Up

The same applies to BMX. Over the last ten years, I've drifted in and out...after my son
got his bike last year, we've been hardcore.

Good to see someone else tractor beamed back in the sport.

Oh, the paint almost looks like 84-ish GT "mach one" yellow. My friend had one that
color. Really dig it.

keep this one like it is, since you have history with it.  it's sweet!

buy a white frame and fork to build a replica of your first one.  smile

I think thats the route I'm going to take. I just haven't been able to bring myself to strip her down and redo it. I have quite fond memories of the repaint and achieving my goal bitd of making it different.

Thanks. Yeah I shot it with acrylic enamel and then clear coated. It has held up well. It's got plenty of scratches from my riding it bitd and being stored and moved from place to place with me over the years. It was always stored inside other than when riding and she still shines good though. smile
