WATCH: Extreme scooters taking off

(VIDEO) http://globalnews.ca/news/769002/watch- … aking-off/

KELOWNA, B.C. – It’s another case of everything old can be new again. The scooter is enjoying a revival among young athletes thanks to a better design. The Freestyle scooter is said to be gaining popularity over skateboards and BMX bikes?!?. As Doris Bregolisse reports, an Okanagan man is hoping to cash in on the trend as it takes off.

It looks cool but I think the cheap factor and easy to learn are bigger factors.

Re: Freestyle scooter said to be gaining popularity over skateboard & BMX?

Last year I had my 12 year old son at Woodward.  I taught him to jump a 5' spine.  He was a little nervous at first but got it.  I told him to keep doing it and then I'd teach him to carve over the spine.  He saw me do it and then did it right away. I asked how he could do it that fast after just learning to jump it. He told me "I learned it on my scooter".

Scooters can be a gateway.  It gets kids into doing tricks, skateparks, doing videos, working with tools.  All the stuff BMX'ers do.  Also, puberty is around the corner and he will be to big for scooters soon.  Many scooter kids will transition to bikes as they are already immersed in the culture.  If you see a good scooter kid, make him ride your bike and I bet he will be good.

Don't hate on scooters.  They could help save BMX from the dwindling market we are now in.

ride your bike until it breaks.

I don't  hate on scooters--i just think that if it doesn't have pneumatic tires, it ain't worth riding.  you can QUOTE me on that.

I got an old school Zoot in need of major restoration.

I am certainly more inclined to get to work on restoring it seeing that my girls would thoroughly enjoy.

Kids like them because they are way easier to learn than skateboarding and cheaper than bikes.

Re: Freestyle scooter said to be gaining popularity over skateboard & BMX?

I bought two Schwinn Yo! Deluxe scooters for my kids as a transition into biking. Figured it would help them with learning their balance, etc... and prep them for their bikes. They rode them a few times this spring and were pretty excited about them. Well, they both shed their training wheels this summer and now the scooters just sit and collect dust! yikes lol

Rollerblades were huge at one point too. I think they have the same future.

Re: Freestyle scooter said to be gaining popularity over skateboard & BMX?

Well, I remember when the scooter started coming out back in the 80's and they were getting popular. Even featured in BMX Plus sometimes. Then they just kinda went away. Maybe people weren't ready for them as much as they might be right now. But, this being said, if scooters are the next big thing, we better go buy and hoard all the old school scooters we can because before you know it they will be worth tons of $$$. lol

blades might be the one exception to my "no non-pneumatic tires" ideology.  but only for landrollers.  offroad blading is kick ass.

Re: Freestyle scooter said to be gaining popularity over skateboard & BMX?

I thought lame but as I dug deeper on YT I seen some rad street like a frame slide to one footed nose wheelie then a no footer drop off. They get down but I'm more of 20inch freestyling.

If I didn't freestyle yesterday, I wouldn't be freestyling today.

Re: Freestyle scooter said to be gaining popularity over skateboard & BMX?

I'm all for bmx and skateboards. Scooters have no place in my book. The whole scooter thing is the new roller blades of the 90's. it was a huge hype for several years then ended up in the toilet where they belong. Can't wait til the scooter hype comes to an end and more kids ride bmx or skate again. Just my 2 cents

Youngsters crowd Staten Island's 5050 Skatepark to meet their scooter idol, Australian Ryan Williams

FANS SPEAK

Silver Lake resident Stephen LaRosa, 13, a student at Prall Intermediate School, explained why he started to scooter in 2005: "A bike (referring to the BMX) is too heavy, and a skateboard has no handlebars." He, too, praised Williams for his Silly Willy trick, and said that he was "more excited than ever" to meet and ride with his hero in the skatepark.
