can't cure stupid, but sure hope I can find a work around.

Ok, so here is the problem. I am in the middle of a rescue on my 87 haro fst. I had the paint perfect, the brand new repo decals are on, every thing peachy. Then I f'd up big time. I started to clear coat and that's when it happened, all the paint started to spackle from the hummidity. I have no choice but to repaint the hole thing over again. Is there a way to rescue the decals? At $70 I can't really afford to order more (the boss aka the wife would kill me) sad any help would be great.

Just hoping that one of the many master restorers has come across this before and might know how to rescue the stickers. They are from frog if that helps anyone.

Extra protection. You always want a couple coats of clear on there. Helps with chipping and scratches.

I would never clear coat any decals. Thats overkill for no real purpose.

Trust me guys, I've beaten my self up a lot over this fubar. Like the title says, can't fix stupid. Just looking for any suggestions on how to rescue the decals.

Ive never used frogs decals before so wanted t o be sure ink would not run. Any time decals come off of printer, or press they are given a coat of clear.

+1

Not really sure you can rescue the decals.

Buy a Pro membership, sell some stuff and buy the decals again smile

Spackle? Like fisheyeing or blushing (cloudy clear)? Fisheyes are fixable blushing is not. Why wouldn't you clear over decals if your doing a base/clear refinish? Done it many times, bury it in clear to protect it.

Re: can't cure stupid, but sure hope I can find a work around.

ive killed a spraybomb job before with clear

sprayed too heavy and as it gets a hard surface the solvent tries to get out and goes down into the paint, yup, orangepeeled all over

good luck with your decals sad

+1 I was amazed that everyone was acting like they have never heard of this before. I always clear over everything.

Re: can't cure stupid, but sure hope I can find a work around.

Spackle like as in your ceiling spackle. All of the paint that came into contact with the clear did it. Sorry for never posting the pics but after a bad day at work and all the hard work I put into the bike just to have to do it over again and the responses I was getting on here I just said screw it and ripped them off sad I did find out later that you can pour boiling water in them and they will come right off though. I guess I am going to try and paint them by hand and see how they come out. I think painted looks better than stickers anyway. And if I don't like how they look I will save up some more money and buy them again I guess.

Re: can't cure stupid, but sure hope I can find a work around.

i personally wait a week or more before i do anything to the base coat surface. i have had paint orange peel, fish eye, and aligator and check in every fashion. humidity is huge in this work. i live in AZ and leave my stuff to bake in the sun for days. if its cold or too humid; i use a heat gun very carefully to "bake" the solvents out. good luck on yer endever. i hate un-doing hours of perfection, cause of 1 booboo sad

Re: can't cure stupid, but sure hope I can find a work around.

Thats the paint reacting with the clear, it's a chemical thing not humidity. If you mixing brands it could be a problem, or if you're mixing spray bomb with automotive clear, causing it to lift. Intercoat clear helps with sealing the paint before clear, or using a little of the paints basemaker in the clear.
