Re: Dyeing TUFFS - The "How To" thread.

I am currently working on restoring a set of green Peregrine Master mags. I have pretty much followed all of these steps including the salt. The only thing I did differently is I used multiple bottles of liquid dye as I was unable to find the powder dye in neon green. The mags have been sitting in extremely hot water for about an hour now and still don't appear to have taken hold of any color. I even dipped a clean vinyl white seat in for a few minutes to see if that would take any color and nothing. Any suggestions? Should I leave them in overnight?

What color did use actually use? And they do make NEON green you just have to purchase it online in a larger commercial size.
I also used a bucket water heater to keep the water at 160 degrees. And leave the mags  in longer if they need it. Checking them every 15 minutes  and restiring the dye mix.

I used RIT neon green liquid dye. The only step I did not do was the bucket heater as I do not have one and couldn't find a good one. The bucket I used was placed in a bath tub and surrounded by a constant supply of hot water. The mags eventually dyed but all the dye has since washed off.

Re: Dyeing TUFFS - The "How To" thread.

Time to revive and old thread for the upcoming Bmx  show season.
I took these yellow tuff mags that were majorly  faded from sitting out in the California sun for years.
1st I lightly blasted them and got the orange paint off the single fin on each rim.
Then I soaked them in 1 to 5 solution of bleach and water overnight.
Rinsed them , then yellow rit dye treatment and used my bucket heater to keep them at 180 degrees.https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/28287/20210301_160606603f019346.jpg

Re: Dyeing TUFFS - The "How To" thread.

I tried dyeing a set of Skyway 6 spokes today. So far, the result is not what I was hoping for. The wheels came out kind of splotchy. I’m not sure why that would happen.

I think I’ll try again tomorrow and double the amount of dye. Hopefully that will get the job done.

Here are my finished wheels. They are darker than I wanted but they will do for now.https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/252995/e0aaa86e-bf7d-423f-bf47-40266772ea65612ce7ea07.jpeg
