Ron Wikerson... Still RAD!!!

I figured I share a pretty cool story about a BMX/Freestyle LEGEND. I recently decided to dedicate a hallway in my home to some of the BMX related memorabilia I've collected over the years. While sifting though boxes of stuff & making decisions on what to frame, & what to put back in storage, I discovered I was missing a really COOL piece of my collection... Ron Wilkerson's autograph!!! Well I should mention the story... in March of 1986 I attended a Haro Bikes/Two-Hip Clinic  & Ron W. was the BMX Pro teaching the tricks... I had to ride about 12 miles to get there, & like I said it was March in NJ which means it was about 40 degrees. Once I arrived I got some very BAD news... it was 12 bucks to attend the clinic!! I definitely did not have $12.00 on me, so when it came time to start the clinic, Ron started collecting cash, & handing out trick lists. When he got to me on line he said you going in... I put on my best sad face & said... I really want to but don't have the cash! He gave me the the same sad look & said I didn't ask if ya had any money... I asked if you were going into the clinic, & handed me that piece of paper, the trick list...& said your IN!! About 3 hours of insane tricks later, the clinic was over... & then I got my shot, I asked Ron for his signature, & like always he signed for EVERYONE that asked, Stay Rad!!! Ron 2-Hip Wilkerson. I remember saying THANKS RON... I won't forget this!! Now back to 2013, & me, looking for this one piece of paper... this 27 year old Trick List with Ron W's autograph. No luck, & really bummed... So my wife, who's in the printing BIZ says, pick a cool picture of him from back in the day & I'll make a nice print of it, whatever size you want & we can send it to him... & maybe we can get him to sign it?? So I went with the first cover of Freestyln' w/Ron on the cover, & had my wife print out 2 POSTER SIZE, I enclosed a letter explaining the above story, 12.00 bucks that I owed for the clinic, told him to please keep one of the posters for himself, & asked him to please sign one to me... 2 weeks later...http://i853.photobucket.com/albums/ab99/flatlandfox/IMG_8462_zpsd7ad82d8.jpg After opening the print, & seeing the cool autograph, I was even more psyched to see Ron had hand written a small note to me, thanking me for sharing my RAD story, & the print... & even mentioned that after shipping the poster back to me, he was able to put 2 bucks into the 2-Hip tour/clinic fund... LOL!!! Ron Wikerson is still very RAD after all these years!! Thanks Ron!!

Re: Ron Wikerson... Still RAD!!!

What a cool story! Really shows a lot about someone's character big_smile I don't think Ron could have chosen a better phrase (about going in, not about the $) cool  Honestly, man, as cool as it was of Ron to do that for a kid, you probably made his day as well (the smile on your face was probably worth a million bucks to him)! Win-Win wink

Re: Ron Wikerson... Still RAD!!!

I rode with Ron in Dothan Alabama at the afa free style nationals when he was with HARO. Dave Nouri and Ron were a damn trip!!Ghost riding their bikes and just having a good time and in the mix with the rest of the jam circle.I asked him his secret to going so high on the ramps and he said"Go fast,What ever you do ,dont pull back on the vert ,go as fast as you can with out chickening out and hold on!!' " If you do all these things right ,it will be fun!If you do these things wrong, you will know it when ya wake up!!". He and Dave Nouri were just guys who happen to be very good at what they did and just wanted to have fun!!It was a contest I will never forget!!

Re: Ron Wikerson... Still RAD!!!

Ron and thebHaro team were all about FUN! My uncle's bike shop would have the team out in NNJ for demo in the 80's. Their trailer was broken into in Manhattan and all the homeless people in the area were wearing Haro gear!

What a cool story.  He is a class act for sure.  For you NorCal members, rumor has it that he shows up and rides at the Lake Cunningham skatepark in San Jose.

Re: Ron Wikerson... Still RAD!!!

Ron and the Haro team came to Marietta Ga back around 1985 or 86 and rode at Free Flite BMX. Me and my buddy Rocky "acquired" a Wilkerson Rd sign that just happened to be near his house. I took to the show and had Ron sign it. That thing hung on my wall for years. I have no clue where it went sad

Cool guy though. He didn't even blink when asked to sign government property smile

Re: Ron Wikerson... Still RAD!!!

Ron one of my favourite riders of all time, being from Canada I've never got too meet or see many pros, just in the mags, took a trip when I was 15 to Disneyland and then off to Mexico, driving down by bus I recognized the tarps and the enchanted ramp and trees behind the tarps as Ron's house and the enchanted ramp, it was the highlight of the trip
