Re: ONLY FOR PEOPLE THAT HAVE CROSSED OVER TO THE DARK SIDE!!!

I love my modern daily rider.  I love the old school bikes too(started riding in 85), but honestly...for serious riding, nothing beats the new bikes.  They are well crafted, well designed, stronger and lighter than anything I ever rode BITD.  The technology far surpasses anything I ever dreamed of back then.  You can have a new school bike, but do it your own way.  I ride flatland on this Flatware, with a KHE Geisha Freecoaster, Autumn Handlebars(kind of a throwback to old Haro bars, but these are actually 4 piece, both brakes, a Gyro, and a LONG seat post.  This post in the Infinity post at 330mm.   The youngsters may tease me about the flagpole seatpost...it's a good thing I am old and am past what people think of me.wink
,
No "dark side"...just setting up a bike that is good for modern riding and progressing.  In my opinion, the only bikes from back then that comes close in technology was Redline RL-20's and RL-20 II's.

Why ride when you can race! 2004 SE (Fuji) OM flyer.  I thought all this old used up "darkside" stuff got played out on VBMX.com 10 years ago?

When I find a part i need for something I am putting together and I have no trust as to weather the part is 30 years old or 30 days old and I'm being charged a price on par with the real genuine and true item. I not only have to question the logic of people with your mind set but the state of the whole hobby in general. That is more to the point why so many people that knew better just walked away. Because they stopped being "OLD" kids bikes and are just kids bikes. Where in all that does the bullshit really lay?

I'm 31 and love my BTM! It's my daily rider. I like old school bikes and ride them as well, but as others have said here, for serious riding I really dig new school. I've also got an LTF and a Subroda Pandora DTT new school build in the works.

No "dark side"...just setting up a bike that is good for modern riding and progressing.  In my opinion, the only bikes from back then that comes close in technology was Redline RL-20's and RL-20 II's.

I was hardcore flatland back in 1990-91..and seemed to me that some of the best flatland bikes were the one's I had (and still do)87 Kuwahara Bravo team,88 Ozone ,85 Hutch Trick star...with the B.S. hacked off(pegs)..The Redline's had that TALL forklifter B.S....Not the greatest for flat..I WISH we had some of the stuff that you guy's have today....TOP NOTCH SH-T!

r

I agree, by the time Redline RL-20II's were really kicking off, there was much better suited bikes for flatland.  Notice I said the technology, not the actual performance of the bike.  The Forklifter stem was utter crap though.  The Forklifter bars were ahead of their time.   Other bits, such as welding/fabrication/chroming were all top notch.  The oval down tube, the tapered forks legs...and the capped and bulleted chain/seat stays were all top notch.  Not to mention the forks being drilled for recessed front brake bolts(how many of us tore up shoes on that stupid bolt in the back!).

As for Hutch's.  The Trickstar I had was built all wonky!  And by wonky, I mean some of the tubing was welded together crooked!  And the welds looked like hell.  The angles were good for flat.  But I swore them off then and there.  As for the Ozone and Kuwahara.  The Ozone was ahead of it's time because of features like the welded/set-up of the "London Mod" dual cable routing to the back brakes.  Also of note, the forks were made with dropouts were you could adjust the offset of your wheel.  A lot of riders ride with zero offset wheels in their forks these days.  Makes steering quicker and more responsive.  The Kuwa's and Ozone's had 77 degree head tube angles...which already makes for a quick steering!  Too quick in my book.  The angles were all over the place BITD, from 72 degree head tube angles on the General Fred Blood Pro(I had one, learned most of my rolling tricks on one) to 77 degree head tubes on Ozone's and Kuwa's.   You had anywhere from 65 to 75 seat tube angles there too!

To sum this all up...while I appreciate some of the bikes improvements from BITD, I would never go back to them.  The bikes now are all almost identical...because of years of tried and true years of riding/testing.  For the most part, head tube angles are all 74.5 or 75 and seat tubes are usually from 70 to 72.  No more having to use laid back seat posts on ultra steep seat tube angles...no more bending them to crap!  The tapered, double/triple butted tubing is amazing, light in the right places, strong where it is needed.  The frames all have a good "balance" and are of a middle ground weight wise.  Not ultra light, not a tank like 2-Hip Porks and other overbuilt frames of the mid-school era, which was a re-action to the flimsy stuff being produced in the 80's.

Besides, who wants to bend another dinner plate when you hang up on coping?  Sprockets are small now for a reason! lol.  tongue

Anwho, not judging...just explaining why this old guy only rides new school bikes.  40 years young, and still shredding.  BMX4life!

Cool thread!

Thank you on the cool Thread ! That's what this is about ! I have about 22 Friends  (wow I have Friends lol) on here that I talk to on the phone from time to time ! It always seams that they ask me questions about my New School and why I did it ! When I get talking, they always cut me off and say, I'm thinking of crossing the line ! yikes lol ! I had my Nose turned up to these things, cause I listened to everyone one here bash them sad ! Then the day came, where my 16 Year old Son wanted a bike ! I was a Proud Dad that day and was taking my Son to the bike store and was going to show him CHROME and 48's three years ago ! I walked in and went to the BMX's and was SICK to my stomach lol ! I asked dude, where's all the Chrome and he laughed at me ! He asked me if I was New to BMXing and I told him NO and that I just built some bikes from BMXMUSEUM.COM and he said, that's a Museum yikes ! My Son feel in Love With the 2010 Haro Forum and I was Like What Ever ! He rode the Haro and Loved it ! We went to the skate park, and HE was the SH** yikes ! I even tried to ride it,and just didn't like it ! Then it sat for months and I told my Wife I gotta take Zach's bike out and ride it to keep everything tight on it ! The 1st 10 minutes on it, I hated it lol ! I raised the seat and pulled his bars back and it was a different world ! I Love it so much that my 2009 Haro X4 came into my life (Thx to my Wife) and I never looked back ! 21" or 21.50" TT for me is it, with no more Lay Backs ! Cassette's are loud as Heck ! 25/9 is the SH** and if u like. Taller gear in anything, 28/9 is perfect ! U can leave the seat post up on a New School no more than 5 inches and the kids won't laugh at you ! Put the bars even with the forks, run the seat about 5" and ride it like that for 2 weeks and you'll never go back to " The Old Side  " ! I tell my friends this and 7 of them are now riding Haro's, fits, Standrds, S&M's, Sunday's ! That's because they became opened mined ! Good Luck and hope You Join " The Dark Side " ! smile

I never told you i thought about crossing the line on the phone tongue  but if someone want to give me a watermelon Sunday i might be swayed

now this i would ride

Re: ONLY FOR PEOPLE THAT HAVE CROSSED OVER TO THE DARK SIDE!!!

41 years old and pretty much only ride new school now.

My BTM is my favorite for street. Everything is so much easier on this bike.

Also ride a 24 Dirtbike and a 26 Mob for street/trails. And trying out a Model C for street/park as well.

I had come into the thread thinking "finally a place where I won't have to read posts from the giant seat post snobs..." Thought wrong I guess.

I have ridden bmx with my seat as low as it would go since 1979... I could never understand why people would want to get slammed in the nuts with a plastic seat or BF'd with the seat snout. And as far as sitting and riding goes, i dont use pliers to tighten wheel nuts, why would I sit on a Bmx bike? Right tool for the job?  Who wants to see a picture of my beach cruiser? It's got a basket too.

Word up to you Ken for making this tread.
