Making your own 'Hard to Find' screw...

I managed to snap a Skyway pedal screw, whist doing a resto. This is the screw that holds the body onto the spindle, not one of the screws that hold the cage onto the body.

The screw was a 6-40 which is an extremely difficult size to find...plus it was a left handed thread! After contacting several places (including Skyway) with no luck I decided to make my own.

    Heres the broken screw -

I found some 6-32 x 2" screws at Ace Hardware. The screw needed to have as long an uncut portion as possible to a) cut enough new threads onto, and b) allow the die to settle onto the piece and cut the threads squarely.

I cut the threaded portion off with a Dremel, and found a great engineering place that sold 6-40 left hand thread dies (Amazon now sell this die ...)

    Threaded the blank screw.....

I then threaded the die back on to the screw, cut the screw down to about ½" (so it will tighten down in the spindle and hold the pedal body on) bevelled the end and un-screwed the die to clean the threads out.

Rebuilt my pedal and rode off into the sunset....

Ive had to make custom screws and nuts many times for custom car work, I take the lazier route, I simply go to the machine shop.

Re: Making your own 'Hard to Find' screw...

great job, its nice the bolt manufacturers make the non threaded part of the bolt (shank), the same size as the major diameter.  nice find on the left hand threaded die.
