Re: Score!! Rare Ultramax Cranks

A key may lie in the "produced by lienmax" stated on the landar packaging, maybe they were the actual manufacturer for both and ultramax simply and crudely stamped them as they're own - back then strange things took place without the Internet to police things (ie. PKs sticker as race incs or mongoose branded AP tuffs without consent from either skyway or AP himself - etc)

I'm not sure how the ultramax a were packaged here in the states but I'd assume that green felt packed case was a sure sign they are landar brand offerings ....

I am Don Parscale and this statement is not true. Jeff was the original test rider and ran them at all the time and at all the nationals. He also had them on his bike when the won the WORLD championships. I can prove this statement. Also they were never chrome plated, it was a special plating used by nasa that doesn't weaken the product like chrome does. The ones in the picture are from the latest batch, I can tell by the drive pin.

No one ever made Ultramax cranks but me. They were never stamped but hand engraved so not to weaken them. They also all have serial numbers.

Re: Score!! Rare Ultramax Cranks

One more thought there were one batch of cranks were lost in shipping on the way to the heat treater and UPS sold them at a action in TN. These were not heat treated and were never engraved with Ultramax on them. Also Shimano copied them and made a large batch, they air freighted some of them to all there US riders and they all broke before the boat made it to the US with the big batch so they sold them to a company in Taiwan, from there I do not know what happened to them. My son Jeff raced at all the nationals so he informed me what was going on with the Shimano team that had the copy cranks.
I tried to get Shimano to make them with my specs. but they would not talk to me instead they copied them but they didn't know all the process to make them strong. All the seat post were heat treated and marked Heat treated to keep the shops from puting a Ultramax decal on a different brand saying they were ours. I had shops actualy tell me they wouldn't sell out seat posts because they didn't break and they couldn't sell the rider another seat post.

Watch the PM's roll in to you now for a set. You shouldn't have let the cat out of the bag about having the jigs and parts. lol

Re: Score!! Rare Ultramax Cranks

I still have serial #1029 Ultramax proto I made for Factory Robinson pro Bob Woods. Bob ran 172mm which were short for a pro but Bob was a real spinner. I made this pair 172mm right side and 174mm left side to see if they work because your right leg is stranger than your left leg. I never told Bob what I did to see if he could tell the difference. He knew right away and call me and said something was wrong with them. He sent them back and I kep them. It was a idea that didn't work. Two mm is a very small amount but Bob knew right away. You never know until you try it.
The pair on Ebay are real and from the second change of drive pins.  The first ones had a trheaded pin, second was the straight pin like the ones on eBay and the last ones had a machined pin but didderent than the ones on this thread.

Re: Score!! Rare Ultramax Cranks

I bet good money those are all landar, and not ultramax.

Don since we have your attention - would you have an average of the amounts you produced and sold (sans the lost batch) - since they were serial numbered, any chance you kept record of where they were sold too as well ? Did ya make any certain size more then others ?

Re: Score!! Rare Ultramax Cranks

On and do you have any insight on the stem(s) ? Was there one or two or three different designs - I am only familiar with one and I'm not even sure if you actually made it to production and commercial sale with them - I've only ever seen pics, wouldn't mind seeing them again if you happen to have any documention of them around .... Cheers and hope you don't mind the fact I'm trying to pick your brain.
