It brings back the feeling some of us had as kids..

Really? A feeling? That sounds like a drug addict to me man. The feeling would be taking that set of areospeeds or 401's out of the box, putting them on your bike and ROCKIN' OUT!!!...in 1984. I was there. Anything else is chasing the high and kind of lame.

It's cool if one want to live in the past but, I have a King Diamond nightlight. and it whispers in my ear whilst I sleep.

Alot of things that sell for high prices get relisted due to no-pays, like people bid the stuff up for fun with no intention of paying hmm

It's been that way since the dawn of time in everything, not just vintage bmx.
To me, the thought of paying $3500.00 for a junk set of cranks is stoopid. To the guy that wants them to complete his Hutch build and can afford it, it's not stoopid. I will never pay that for an old bike part, first because I can't afford it, and second because even if I had that kind of moolah I could never justify it. But it doesn't bother me that someone else can and did. Good for them. Good for the hobby.

Re: Who picked up the Aerospeeds for $3500 on E-Bay?

Overall I would say that the selling market is soft right now.   Good deals get reposted over and over in the for sale sections.   I just sold some pretty nice stuff on Ebay because it would not sell here and it went cheap in my opinion.   Seems like the market is strong on extremely rare stuff and super deals only....

Re: Who picked up the Aerospeeds for $3500 on E-Bay?

I hope the buyer is someone who actually pays for the item.  I have some friends who've told me they've had problems on ebay with people bidding and not paying for some high end bike stuff in the past.  Anyway, nothing new here, it's proably just someone with more money than most who's willing to spend it.  Good for them.  If I had the money I'd be going for an old school 80's turntable that I want but couldn't afford then or now.  If you really want something you've got to be willing to spend more than the next guy.   smile

I have to agree with that. Whatever it sells for, it sells for. Sure some people may not be able to realize their dream bike, but thats not much of a shattered dream in the big scheme of life. Anyone who truely appreciates BMX and what it offers, can purchase a nice bike for well under 4 figures. And when presented with the choice of riding or not riding, even a $179 Wal Goose is accetable. To me and the people I roll with, what kills the hobby is hoarding. It makes me feel like a POS for belonging to a hobby where people put a dozen of each part above and beyond a home, school, or anything of true value in life for the affirmation of strangers. Its like a lifelong athlete walking into a room filled with dudes wearing his football jersey while playing magic in their 40's. I consider myself a strong, resourceful, educated person based on what I've done and how I've done it. When I go running for the hills and think about selling everything to take up ping pong instead, that says a lot about my thoughts on the state of hoarding and the sadness discontent that it breeds.

Im glad someone cleaned up on those cranks, it means America is still doing something right. Supply and demand, overpriced or not is a true luxury 160 nations out of the near 200 cant even dream about.

I don't usually quote things here this big. I hate scrolling... lol

Anyways,
I disagree with yous 2. It's not supply and demand. It's new money. The supply is already there.... and here's my ramblings on the matter.

Unless it's Woody or Juan or Haney or somebody like that bidding this stuff up to preserve or whatever, be real. The rest of us have been trading this shit around for years. Why would us, the common man, bid this stuff up? That makes no sense. A good percentage of the stuff on ebay has been in almost everyone here's (or Society's) garage at one point or other. Who's going to pay 3-4x as much to get stuff they already owned or something just like it. Unless you are under 30 at this point or never rode a bike in your life, who's sweatin' this stuff that bad? Who really cares to question it?

The vintage cars vs BMX market argument holds no weight with me so don't bother addressing it. I wouldn't give anyone ten bucks for a 30 year old fan belt or spark plugs. And Vintage Cragars are the same price they were 20 years ago. So pffft.

So I don't get the whole vintage BMX market warriors lately. The vintage Schwinn market hasn't changed in years, maybe even gone down. Why is BMX so hot all the sudden? No possible way in this universe am I going to fork over 4k for a repainted RLII right now. But, that's what's happening. 30yo Hutch cranks that truly suck performance wise, for $3500?  Might as well buy a Fabergé egg. Those are nice to look at and pretty much useless too. What can you actually DO with Aerospeeds anyway? Putt around the neighborhood and make sure everyone sees them. Really the winners here are the seller and the guy that only bid 3500. The loser is the guy that bought a nice piece of artwork that no one is going to care about in 60 years.

Talk it up if you have something to sell I guess. Get all the frat boys into it so they can be cooler than the other guy.

I don't know man. The whole thing seems weird to me for something so trivial. The collecting thing sound herds geeky from my vantage point. And, that's a turn off. "Let's flip BMX bikes for $ SHOOTS YEAH BRAH!" awkward. I guess I'm too laid back.

Hope I didn't offend anyone during the writing of this post. Shit, I probably did. Oh well, thems the straight knuckles how I sees 'em.

You guys that have a hard time grasping the concept of why low production and hard to find items fetch good money at auction need to take a basic course in economics.

Also, 3500 bucks is chump change in most adult hobbies. For example, vintage car collecting, militaria, art, vintage motorcycles etc.... Make bmx collectables pale in comparison as far as cost to participate goes.

Crying about how much authentic bmx gear sells for on a collector driven website is as wacky as joining a Lamborghini website and crying about what a Lamborghini costs to buy.

Can't believe rechromed cranks went for that...thats the criminal act here.

Re: Who picked up the Aerospeeds for $3500 on E-Bay?

Over the last few years we've all  seen complete sets go for $2,500 - $3,500 , re-chrome does not seem to hurt the value as long as the " HUTCH " stamp is still deep and clear .The OG chrome was total crap and just about falls of most of them anyway, so it's not a crime to re- finish them in my opinion.

That auction did not seem crazy to me all .

I agree that the spindle looks suspect. Not quite the right sheen.

You're dead on. This is chump change compared to other hobbies.

Folks need to consider, it took 2 people to force that. One guy "only" willing to pay $3500. One guy willing to pay more. How high was the winner ready to go?We'll never know. But, I'd bet it wasn't $3525. Think about it, someone was willing to pay $4000, maybe $5000.....

I have to disagree-this happens in EVERY hobby.  Is it greed when an owner asks 15-20 million for a 1964 Ferrari GTO or should he sell it for 50K so some numbnut can "enjoy" it.  Every hobby has levels-automobiles, vintage BMX, vintage firearms, etc.  I have been in the "game" for over 20 years and it's the way it is.

If this irks you don't look up prices for vintage Hot Wheels-they put BMX parts to shame.
